MSI R9 390 coil whine in my machine, not at the store.

Hemanse

So i bought my R9 390 from MSI about a week ago, got home and noticed quite a bit of coil whine, especially in the higher end of the fps scale, mentioned it to the store owner where i bought it at, a smaller local store, he then said i should bring it down to him and he would test it in a few of their machines, but so far the card doesnt seem to produce any coil whine in their machines, hes gonna give it a few more tries tomorrow, but im still kinda clueless why its so bad in my machine.

I dont really have the budget to just buy a new PSU to test if that might be the issue and the friends i have which use PCs have tiny little PSUs :)

I also borrowed a Club3D R9 290 card they use to test with that they have never noticed any coil whine with, when i put it in my machine it seems to whine quite a bit, so im kinda confused as to what it might be, do i just have a machine that brings out coil whine? I never noticed any coil whine with my 770 for the 2+ years i had it.

Probably the PSU inducing it. It's not dangerous tho - if it's not unbearable then it won't harm anything.

i would probably say that is not the gpu but the psu although 850w with gold efficiency is surely enough i suggest as it is modular change the place of the conector or even the cable

Yeah gonna see what he says tomorrow, if its the same deal im probably just gonna accept it and then maybe switch out the PSU later, maybe get a EVGA G2 or P2. The whine really only gets loud at high fps, in the normal 60-100 range its more of a low buzz that you cant hear with headphones on. Then i also have an excuse to replace my case by then.

It's likely the way the PSU delivers the power to the GPU is resonating in a weird way with the coils on the GPU PCB. It's luck of the draw really - some combos produce less and others more coil whine. Nothing is immune tho.

A buzz i normal - any card has a slight buz to it, any electronic has it - 300+ fps will produce coil whine on ANY card - it's been like that since 2006.

Havent really though about doing that, would seem rather strange if the cable could cause issues :)

My 770 had a slight buzz, this is quite a bit more, but if i have to live with it for a bit until i can change the PSU then so be it, atleast its been thoroughly tested by the shop to make sure there are no faults.

The Buzz can vary from card to card - motherboards are also a factor. Lot's of things can cause coil whine.

Okay, im also quite sensitive to that kind of noise, so might just bother me more than it does other people :)

this is how their 290 sounded in my machine (audio is pretty low due to youtube tho).

Had something like that 2 months ago - it appeared randomly - was there for a week - haven't heard it since
