Long story short, i used the asus AI suite program to OC my i7 6700k (using it's 5 way optimisation) @4.5ghz at about 1.36 on the vcore with the temperatures maxing out in the late 70's (Only got this I when using AIDA64/intel burn test) and a week in i started having instability issues so I reset the BIOS back to its factory state and I'm still experiencing instability including BSOD's (Machine check exception) or the system just freezing entirely requiring a reboot.

I removed my CPU from my mobo to find this on my CPU

I'm not sure what the black stuff is but i suspect whatever it is it cannot be good, what do you guys think i should do? I don't thingk i can get a warranty if it is damaged because it was overclocked, or have i just made a $500 mistake?

P.S. I've completely stopped using thet PC until I can determine the problem.

Cheers guys.

Damage in the heatspreader? Shot isn't clear.

If you are referring to the brown color in the thermal-paste, that is fine, just got a little hot.

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

i really hope thats not solder leaking from the spreader.......

edit: that stuff from the heatspreader looks fine, try cleaning the thermal paste off the cpu and show us another pic

I doubt that is solder leaking from the heat spreader. Most likely just an excess of sealant used to attach the heat spreader to the package itself.

Those CPU's don't use solder in between the heat spreader and die.

That stuff oozing from the sides of the heat spreader is most like the black expoy intel uses to adhere the heatspreader to the CPU PCB

I'm just running through things I have run into in an effort to help.

Check that all the Windows updates are installed, I had updates deciding to install during high load and acting every bit the same as instability. Also check your motherboard driver that it's the right one for the version of windows you run.

If anyone asks you never saw me.
