so, i tried to install mint and ubuntu 100000 times ( and i accidentally deleted my windows partition) so, it runs off the usb fine, but when I try to install it, it gives me some can't install into efi boot partition and its done this every time. So, what is the solution to this? I'm doing this on a first gen surface pro, if that matters.

"if you use the manual partitioning ("Something else"), the difference is that you will have to set the /boot/efi mount point to the UEFI partition. And if there was not any UEFI partition on your HDD, you first will have to create it (see the "Creating an UEFI partition" paragraph below)."

The thing is that it will actually do that automatically if you have an unformatted partition or are completely wiping the drive. Windows seem to like it more if your resize your partitions in windows and leave some unformatted space because microsoft can't handle the idea of dual booting.

Also OP if you aren't trying to dual boot it is recommended to unplug you windows drive beforehand so you don't accidentally do that. (you didn't specify what you were doing)

Edit:

Also there are options in the installer for dual booting, or wiping the drive (the installer will handle both of these), or manual which is what it seems you are trying to do.

I would recommend one of the first two options especially if you are new to linux.

it's kinda hard to unplug in ssd in a tablet lol. but anyways, the only thing on the surface is the bios

Edit: i did try to install by wiping and it still gives me the same problem. it will either say what i mentioned above, or it will do the install but won't get past half.

Oh its a surface. Ok those can be a bit of a pain.

I would recommend this video:

Its a tad out of date and the kernel shouldn't need to be recompiled anymore AFAIK.

I'm pretty sure most of that was on the older kernel (3.16).

You can probably get away with just running apt-get upgrade after you install it.

But you will probably have to toy with it a bit yourself. I don't have a surface to test it on.

Did you check the md5 sum after you downloaded it? That can cause problems.

What are the errors? Does it list them?

no it does not show any errors.

you kinda need to explain this stuff in layman's terms, im tech savvy, but not that tech savvy.

so when installing, its giving me this

the attempt to mount a file system with type vfat in SCSI2 (0,0,0), partition #1 (sda) at/boot/efi failed

Honestly if it doesn't list the errors it might not be an issue.

Personally I would just try to install it and see if any issues pop up. I've installed off of thumb drives giving generic errors and its been fine. The situation is always different so I would just try and see how it goes.
