A friend of mine has asked me to build him a PC to play games and also use either Fraps or Dxtory to capture the game. The two CPUs that I considered for the build were the i7 3770 or the FX-8350. The FX-8350 is cheaper and allows me to fit an SSD into the budget. Would any of you recommend one of these CPUs or something different? I understand that the FX-8350 will allow overclocking which will allow me to get extra performance from the CPU.

Specs for the build are:

Corsair 300r

CXM 600 (Possibly TX650)

2Tb Seagate barracuda

8GB RAM

XFX 7870 Tahiti LE

SanDisk 128GB SSD (If using FX-8350)

AMD FX-8350
Asus M5A97 LE R2.0

Or

i7 3770

MSI H77MA-G43

The 3770 will likely outperform the 8350 in most games.

Don't be so sure.

An SSD is quite nice to have. Although the 3770 will likely outperform the 8350 in most games, it isn't enough to skimp on getting a faster hard drive.

Outperform? I thought games didn't stress CPU enough to make a noticeable/constant difference between i5, i7, 8350, etc.

There are definitely games that stress the CPU enough to make a difference, but even in the most extreme cases it may only be a 6~ frame difference. The difference between an i5 and an i7 in gaming isn't relevant, but an 8350 vs a 3770, there will be a difference in some games. There are also some games where the 8350 actually wins as well, but from the benchmarks I've seen, it tends to be less frequent.

How about neither ? I have a better proposition, the FX 8320, it's $40 less expensive than the 8350 but overclocks nearly as well as the 8350.
The $40 in savings will allow you buy a very good aftermarket cooler for the CPU and really take advantage of its overclocking potential.

The NZXT Havik 140mm CPU cooler is what I'd recommend it's only within a degree of the Noctua NH-D14 and the Corsair H80 (any double thickness liquid cooler) but it's less expensive.

The Asus M5A97 R2.0 is a perfect board for the job and it's what I'd recommend.

Also please take note that the HD 7950 has come down in price significantly, making it a much better choice than the 7870 Tahiti LE.

The blue text links to Amazon.com webpages of the product.

I hope this helps.

i'm using a 6100, which is just a 6 core version of the 8 core you're suggesting.

i have to say, amd chips run hotter and carry more power. from my experience, 3770k, and get him to borrow money for a ssd. he wont regret it

hope this helps

I got the AMD FX-8320 on Thursday for £30 less, I'd definitely recommend going with it over the 8350, I've been able to get it to 4.6 on stock (1.35V)

FX 8350 or 3770

If your budget is limited, the FX-8350 will be better with an SSD. Get a decent motherboard to have the overclocking potential you will need it in the future.

CPU: Ryzen 7-3700x 4.4GHz, MB: ASUS PRIME B450M-AGPU: SAPPHIRE RX 590, RAM: 16GB Corsair 3200MHz, SSD: 480GB Kingston HDD: 2TB WD Green, CHASSIS: CoolerMaster HAF 912, PSU: CoolerMaster Thunder 700W, COOLERHyper 212 Black Edition
