Bigger CPU or more Vram in a laptop for gaming?

Darkley

Hep hey

Been looking at a couple of laptops and i got a question.

Should i go for an ACER Predator G9-791 with I7-6700HQ (clocked at 3.5ghz) + Nvidia GTX 980M 8GB or Alienware R3 17" with I7-6820HK (clocked at 4.14ghz) + Nvidia GTX 980M 4GB.

All other details are the same.

Will the extra 4GB Vram be worth anything on a 980M? Or will the quicker CPU be the better choise for everyday use?

Quicker CPU.

The 980M can't use all that 8gb creamy goodness.

Oh and the 6820HK has the Iris Pro 6200 iirc so extremely smooth streaming if you wanted to

100% agree, 4gb of VRAM is enough, better to have a better overall system, plus I would take Dell over Acer

Thanks all! :)

Alienware it is

Sub question, HD vs UHD? Doubt 980M can handle many games at UHD? But... Alienware does have the option :P

If you're going QHD, the extra VRAM comes in handy, but I would say full HD. Just curious, what's your budget?

Can you give in Euros?

4k is silly on laptops imo and you will only be able to play non (new) AAA games at higher settings at that resolution. Go for 1440p/1080p.

Alienware.... there are better brands out there

When it comes to their laptops, Alienware isn't bad, ESPECIALLY compared to many other brands out there (more notably Acer).

Most of their desktops are cancer though.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

Would love to but info i got is they wont be out till sometime next year. My old ASUS G73SW finally died on me after 5 years so waiting indefinatly aint much of an option.

If i wassent in Denmark that would be a serious option but alas and we dont have any clevo stores here that are worth a damn so pretty stuck on buying an alienware/asus/acer.

Thanks again folks :) Alienware wins this one!

I got just the thing for you.

This has a desktop CPU, G-Sync and up to 980M, and yes, also has Danish keyboard.

Nice config, but if it were me, because I don't like 5400RPM HDDs, I would actually get 2 1TB 7200RPM HDDs. Or if your budget allows, maybe even a 2TB Samsung 850 EVO.

Note: You do realise that with the 4K panel you won't get G-Sync right?

The 5400RPM HDD's are going to be backup in raid so speed on them dossent bother me much. As for G-sync, i know the UHD display does not have it but, with a 980 desktop i pick the higher res over G-sync.
