Check to see if your combo unit has a "bridge" mode. This mode will disable all routing capabilities of the combo unit and make it act just as a modem.

 

 

You may need to bridge the new router and the one given by your ISP, and turn off its wifi.  And yes, different wifi routers and certainly highend wireless access points have massively better range than others

Hello,

I don't know a whole lot in the networking area, and I'd like to know a few things:

  • How can I find out if I'm getting the full speed of my internet or not
  • Timewarner gave me a modem and router all in one, how would I use my own router if I wanted to
  • Is there a way to get better signal of either 2.4 or 5 ghz (I don't care which) in a couple rooms which have sketchy connection, without moving the router or using anything that loses speed/increases latency?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

  2. Plug in another router
  3. make sure you are on an uncrowded channel

If I plug in another router it will make two sets of wifis, why? And I'm not on a crowded channel, it's the range I need. I only get two bars on my tablet, will it help if I get a certain router?

If you are going to use two routers, set one in AP mode, else you will get double NAT.

 

You could stretch a CAT cable to where you have bad coverage and put the other router or an ap there.
