Check to see if your combo unit has a "bridge" mode. This mode will disable all routing capabilities of the combo unit and make it act just as a modem.
You may need to bridge the new router and the one given by your ISP, and turn off its wifi. And yes, different wifi routers and certainly highend wireless access points have massively better range than others
