I'm in desperate need of a new system. I need it for video editing, should I get a core series or a Xeon? I need to stay under $800 for the build. My current machine is on it's last leg. I already have a case and GPU so the total for all of my other components needs to be under $800USD

System: i7 4790K, Hyper 212 EVO, 16 GB Crucial Ballistix, GTX 1070 Super clocked, MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition, Corsair RM 750, Corsair 750D (with 2 additional 140mm NZXT fans up top for exhaust.)

If you want to spend a little less, have a look at the AMD FX-8320/50 + a 990FX motherboard. They're not great for gaming, I used an FX-6300 and after my initial WOW THE GAMES LOOK AMAZING AND RUN SO SMOOTH (it was my first custom PC), I started to notice crazy amounts of stuttering. However, I hear the FX-8 chips are pretty good at rendering, so it's something worth considering.

The Xeon performs the same as an i7 in video editing for much cheaper, so I suggest the Xeon 1231 v3. You will have to use a GPU however, as Xeons don't have integrated GPUs.

I already have an 8320, I am not a fan of AMD. It's my choice for low budget gaming but that's it.

Would the 1231 get me through the next 3-5 years? I will be gaming on it for a short while too, at least until I can upgrade my current machine to be gaming only.

EDIT: I think the cost for me to build the 1231 system is only $100 less than it would be for me to build a system with the 5820K (as I already have a case, storage, and a GPU)

I think it should get you through a good while, given it's got four good strong hyperthreaded cores.

So would the Xeon be recommended over the 5820K?

So would the Xeon be recommended over the 5820K?

The 5820K has two more cores and 4 more threads so will be better for multi-threaded workloads than the Xeon, but in nearly all regions is more expensive than the Xeon. The Xeon is one of the best price to performance chips on the market ATM, as it's basically an i7-4770 which costs slightly more than an i5 in most regions. However, if you think you can stretch to a 5820K, do it, it will perform better for video editing, rendering, modelling, streaming etc. because of the extra cores but gaming performance should be similar.

If its only 100 more I would go with the 5820k, that will provide an upgrade path to the 5960X when they drop in price (used on Amazon or fleabay for $300ish) You already have the DDR4 ram? If you find one of those used later on that would easily add on that "3-5 year" lifespan you are wanting and you'll have a pretty beastly system for maybe a $300 dollar upgrade down the road.

I don't have DDR4 RAM, Maybe you misread when I mentiond I had the FX8320. I don't really need any overclocking ability. I just need a system that can reduce my render times and handle running after effects and premiere. It would also be nice to be able to actually use my machine while rendering or exporting.

If you can afford the i7 5820k mobo and ram, that would be way better than the xeon, if you can fit it in your budget then go for the 1231.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

If it is going to be purely a workstation I would honestly recommend saving your money and buying a used D20, these are from 2011-13 but they will be doing 1600ish cinebench, cheap as dirt and you can use the extra money elsewhere, perhaps on a really good GPU or something else. 12 cores, 24 threads... $600.

Thats actually a set of quads, but they get listed with X5675, X5680, and X5690s hexa-cores at times. About an $8000 system 3 years ago.

That seems possible, but since it's for my work I like the idea of it being new and not refurbished.

So the ultimate decision has been made. I think since I don't see the gaming rig being upgraded/updated for at least another year... I will be going with the 4790K, MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition, 16GB RAM ( with potential to upgrade after running some stress tests) and the EVGA SuperNova G2 650W. This will leave me some money for upgrades, like I may get a bigger SSD than my 120GB. I can get all of these parts for about $622 including tax. A little more because I will be paying an additional $10-15 for them to do an on-site post test which is worth it to me because I live 30 minutes from the store. I will be upgrading the cooler in the near future, probably around december so I can over clock it.
