8% difference in price but less than 8% difference in performance.

http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-970-vs-AMD-R9-390/2577vs3481

Use this as a comparison.

And if ur monitor is higher than 1440 go for 390 if not the 970 is a better choice.

Not to mention that the 970 comsumes 30-50w less.

Im not a fanboy, as im using r9 290x and seeing that with that price different 970 is still a better choice. But if the price is equivalent.. The 390 is a better choice.

At last it depends on the resolution u will be using. Dont mind the 8GB and DX12 much, as the 390 GPU will run out of juice before it could make use of its 8GB ram when newer gen gaming is available, also when dx12 become more mainstream there will be many cards which perform better than the 390 anyways

Erm - that's not entirely true - the VRAM is not remotely connected to the GPU core - it has to do with the bandwidth, of which the 390 has plenty. Any GPU can max out it's VRAM, given enough bandwidth. People use to say that about the 280/280x yet here is a screenshot of me using 3GB of VRAM but only 50% of the GPU's power. Running a perfectly smooth 60 fps.

sfa.png

As for DX12 - Hawaii does exceptionally well in DX12 reaching a 980 in terms of horse power.

If your resolution is 1080 then go with 970 as 3.5+0.5GB of ram is more than enough.

Just make sure u get a decent non reference 970, and u can oc it to catch or overtaken the performance of reference gtx980

No it is not - look above - that's not even maxed settings on 1080p.

Terra, you should also try and to research on other websites. Im not saying my point is correct, but dont believe don as well, he is extreme AMD fan and will never suggest Nvidia card no matter what (try see his other posts).

Again, dont have to trust me and so some more research on other websites, there are plenty which offer comparison between 970 and 390- its ur choice

Sometimes you can bargain for lower prices with some exchange of words. But actually, if you're aiming for a 980 Ti. I suggest just snagging a 290 for cheap. It it very well performing too. Then when have enough money, you can sell of the the 290 or re-purpose it for another build.

There is no better product between 970 and 390, and as far as im concerned; you never suggest any nvidia cards and even if nvidia offer better performance, you would never recommend nvidia, yet i never see u posting anything related to points in which AMD loses to nvidia; and yet you always offend nvidia in everymeans possible.

http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=2438&gid2=2264&compare=geforce-gtx-970-4gb-vs-radeon-r9-390

Terra, as i said do some more research from other websites and dont believe one sided recommendation. I am no fanboy of both cards, and from that price difference and 1080 usage, 970 seems to be a better option for me.

The only Nvidia card currently better than it's AMD counterpart in terms of both price and performance is the 980 Ti.

I'm sorry but that's just how it is. I can provide you with countless benchmarks so please do not try to convince me I am being subjective.

It might be that one is the version with a backplate. If both are identical, get the cheaper.

The backplate adds rigidity to the card reducing sag. That's about it.

No, there is more factor to consider not just Price/performance. There are power consumption/performance in which u never mentioned and Nvidia always win by this.

Its a matter of location as well, from where i live. No one use AMD as you will pay more for less.. Eg. You can find gtx980 for 15000baht and r9 390x for 19000baht. Despite GTX980 has more powerful GPU, you pay less for something better.
