1. Budget & Location - $700ish USD
2. Aim - Mainly just a home PC. I will be doing light video editing and photoshop work, need storage, NOT a gamer. I am a amature radio operater so I will be running programs the require a good reasonable fast procceser and RAM. I run a few SDR (software define radio) which need a good procceser.
3. Monitors - 1, right now I have a Dell 24". I may down the road one day upgrade to a better one with HDMI.
4. Peripherals - OS, I'm thinking Windows 7, not sure which type yet.
5. Why are you upgrading? - Well what I have now is a Dell Inspiron 5375 w/ Intel Core Duo, 4G of RAM, 280G hard drive running Windows 7 Home Premiem. I have 50G left on the hard drive. I want to build something with more storage and faster. I plan on getting a NAS down the road so I want need a bunch of hard drives in this PC for space.

So here is what I have come up with:

 - Intel Core i5-4460S 2.9GHz LGA 1150 Intel HD Graphics 4600 Desktop - I went with one with graphics to save money and I knew I wasn't going to be gaming.
 - Corsair Vengeance CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10R Mémoire RAM DDR3 1600 16Go Rouge

 - Gigabyte GA-H97-D3H (rev. 1.0)  LGA 1150 Socket
 - LEPA G500-MB Power supply
 - SanDisk SDSSDRC-032G 32GB - for OS only

 - WD BLACK SERIES WD1003FZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

- APEVIA X-DREAMER4 Series X-DMR4-NW-BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case  - I went with this case its steel, RFI issues, and it has a LCD screen on it for temp read out. If I could find one with more read outs that tell me of whats the PC is doing that would be cool too.

So in a nut shell I want a reasonable fast home PC. I'm not new to PC just new to building them and after watching countless youtube videos I think I want to build my next PC! If you see where I may can do better, whille staying within budget, or where I may be overkilling it please let me know.

Thanks!!

so.. a few things wrong with your build.

first: the hell is that PSU even... - i dropped in a decent seasonic unit.

second: there is NO reason in the world to get a 32GB SSD. the one i picked out is mere dollars more expensive, for 4 times the storage.

third: theres no use in picking a case because its steel, because any modern well built case is pretty much a perfect farraday cage.

i decided to give a spin to it, and use the "generally recommended" parts that flow trough the suggestions on this forum a lot.

You could probably get a cheaper case and PSU since there isn't too much going on in there

potentially both quite overkill...

but i look at it like this: if he buys both VERY decent components now, when he needs a hardware upgrade in 2-6 years, he can re-use them without needing to think about it.

I get the PSU point but its not like an S340 is any worse than an R5 and its a few bucks cheaper

well, OP mentioned he got a steel case for RFI issues, and a sidepanel window isnt really a good idea when thats to be considered.

well.. short explanation: he's gonna use the pc to mess with software defined radio, meaning that if the device itself is surrounded in a faraday cage (which any closed off case is) it wont interfere with the signals he's sending/receiving.

think of it like this: you're building a pc to VERY accurately measure and record ambient noise, in that case you'd want it to be dead silent, right? thats what the guy is trying to achieve, but with radio signals.

yes, keep RF out, and any pc generated RF in.

Thanks guys keep the suggestions coming!

Why the MSI motherboard over the Gigabyte?

nothing more than personal preference really.

i feel like gigabyte really hasnt been doing very well in the looks category, somewhere MSI really has their stuff figured out.

the MSI pc mate also seems to be quite consistently a good budget pick across the globe.
