More GPU's ?

Hi guys,

Just wondering, how many of you are running one or more graphics cards in your computers?

-With that said, NOT in SLI/Crossfire.

I personally do it to reduce wear on my precious XFX Radeon HD 6990, i hate it that GPU1 will be used 70% more than GPU2, and in the end, they both get tossed cause GPU1 dies. Also do it to save power.

I just recently moved out with my girlfriend, so money is tight

What do you guys have in combination? Why do you do it? Experienced any problems doing it?

Let me know! I'm interested.

I might go back to running my HD 6570 alongside my GTX 680 for folding...

Otherwise I have the integrated graphics on my 4670k disabled.

Sig under construction.

Do you hook them both to the same screen, or dual screen, one for each?

No, I don't have any other desktop gpus besides my 970, and my integrated graphics are disabled for obvious reasons. I would have run a poll to get more of a idea how common it is but maybe I just like graphs.

When I use my HD 6570 for folding I don't have it hooked up to any of my screens because I'm simply using it for compute. I just have my 3x1080p surround setup from my GTX 680.

I may soon have a GTX 295 and GTX 480 alongside my 290 (Well, they'll take turns and the 480 is for 'scientific' purposes :D)

I mean, F@H on the 480 with a modified heatsink with a sheet of metal for keeping my tea warm? xD

EDIT: In poll do I get to be a honorable member of the top option since I haven't gotten them yet?

Back then, when AMD's cards were 180W TDP for the top end and Nvidia's were 250W+ people use to say "TDP and power isn't important, performance matters and FEATURES!" (Btw - 480 was slower than a 5870)

Btw - to answer your question in the OP of the thread - AMD have "Zero Core" tech which vastly reduces the strain on GPUs while idling and the power consumed goes lower than any Nvidia Maxwell card. Don't worry about it :P

Ah, I think you may be right - Zero Core was introduced with GCN. Still though - you're not running 100% power and usage through them at idle - you just can't have them auto-turn off.

Know it.

But GPU1 reaches 60'C when web browsing, while the other is at 43'c.

It's still unhealthy for the HD 6990 I guess.

So Web browsing / Movies / Light Games I play with the Asus 8500 GT 512 MB.

- can even run skyrim with it haha. 20-30 fps 720p low.

That's cause of the cooler, not the GPU load - 60*C is fine :P

It's normal. The blower cooler will always be warmer than an open air one. You don't have to worry, Silicon is a very robust material. You could always raise fan speed.

I used to have two GTX 560s in SLI. Then one of the cards started to have problems probably due to the years of heat.

I disabled SLI for a long time but eventually I had to pull out the faulty card as it was causing huge instability issues.

My 980Ti (MSI Sea Hawk / Corsair Hydro GFX) arrives today.

It will be my new single GPU in my next build and I will likely keep a single GPU solution for a long time to come.

Did you have them installed far apart or right above eachother?

Because when one of the cards is hotter than the other, of course it will die first.

This is what I'm trying to avoid on my HD 6990, so instead of using ONE of it's GPU's on browsing and shooting it up to 60'C,

I use the Asus 8500 GT 512MB for browsing

Yeah, that happened. I wasn't as aware of all the precautions to take back then. I have Linus to thank for educating me on s lot of system building info I know today.

Next time I go for SLI I'll probably end up having both cards water cooled anyways.
