GPU + PSU = Boom/Melt/Sparks?

marlowe221

Well, that is disappointing.

I kind of cobbled this system together from some free parts and a few that I bought.

Looks like I'm buying another power supply...

EVGA GS/XFX TS/Antec High Current Gamer/SeaSonic S12II - all solid units and can be had for as lot as 30-40$ - there was a promo with the XFX being 24$ a few weeks ago.

500-550W usually. Good PSUs aren't expensive, they are just not heavily marketed :D

Any suggestions on where to shop? I'm not seeing prices like that on newegg...

Also, how much should I care about 80+ bronze, gold, etc.?

Use PC part picker.

80+ is only efficiency. These are all good. I'd suggest getting the Antec as it's Semi-modular. Currently they are the cheapest good ones I can find.

Generally speaking, how do I tell a good PSU from a bad one?

Generally speaking, how do I tell a good PSU from a bad one?

Read reviews and I mean read, not just look at a score. Good PSUs typically feature Japanaese capacitors rated at 105*C or above, look for comments on soldering, look for info on voltage and ripple suppression, look for overload information (how much can the PSU overload to), look for ambient temperature tolerance - anything bellow 40*C is bad and should be avoided. Look for fan quality (you want ball bearings or fluid dynamic bearings ideally), look for OEM - good OEMs are Super Flower, SeaSonic and Delta. Stuff like that.

you should be ok aslong as it doesnt get very hot where you live....

a R9 380 is very efficient... so you are looking at like 350-430w power draw... meaning you ARE above the 50% mark, but have yet to reach the 75% mark... Which is good.

A CX600 should hold up and be able to cool itself aslong as you do not load it up 100%...

Keep room temperature below 25c, make sure to clean around your computer and clean the dust-filters for your powersupply regularly. If you do so, you should have no issues running with the CX600 UNTIL YOU CAN AFFORD SOMETHING BETTER!

How is the EVGA 600 B1?

B1 are crapy - B2, G2, P2 and GS are the good ones.

I've had no problems with my 600b. I am looking at an upgrade because I know it's budget, but I can at least say that mine has given me no problems whatsoever.
