I've had this problem were suddenly my ping rises alot and down/up speeds go down. Normally, my ping is arround 110-125 ping (still quite high, but i'm used to it and the wifi is always slow - ADSL from 30 years ago) but when the problem occurs it rises to 250-850 (inconsistent) and down/up speeds are half of normal.

It happens 2 to 3 times a day and lasts anywhere from 2 to 4 hours.

I have found a temporary fix, if I change the channel (hasn't yet made a difference to wich one) then the problem disappears for a while, but the more often I do so, the less long it helps to solve the problem. So I decided to not do that to make sure my router doesn't degrade in performance.

When the problem is active; I don't notice neighbors being in the same channel as us, though. (via fritz.box)

Any help would be appriciated.

WIFI specs (going to wired is *NOT* an option)

Router:  FRITZ! Box Fon WLAN 7360 (FRITZ! OS 6.20)

Wireless adapter: Realtek RTL8191SU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter

Distance from router: About 8 metres, nothing blocking its path.

If you need any other information, please tell me.

If the distance is only 8m you could pull a lan cable. Lan is always better than wifi

Assuming you have tried to restarting the router, try going into the router settings and see if there is a "restore default settings" option. If that doesn't do it, it may just be time for a new router (?).

Also is there anything else that could be using the router? Perhaps a faulty device connected to it is stealing all of the air time.

I will try resseting it to default settings, but buying a new one seems odd since this one isn't very old and has completely fine and reliable apart from this issue.

Maybe it has a warranty? Also do you have a way of ruling out that this isn't a modem issue? or just the ISP in general?
