Hello,

I've been looking into building a server type machine and have found what I think are good deals on some 3xxx series Xeon Phis.  I can't seem to find a whole lot on what it takes to program them, implement them, or check for compatibility.  Any insight on these would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Spoiler

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

What applications you will be kicking on the server?

I should correct myself.  The server part of it would more be for backing up some other computers.  What I was actually looking at putting the power to work on was 3 modeling and then rendering.  I also wanted to try out GPU programming.

they're pretty much enterprise compute only.

if you dont know about them - you probably dont need them.

Well, then you can tell me what I should know about them so I know I don't need them?

well... its basicly a metric shit ton of x86 performance strapped on a pci express card.

Yes, it also will have 57, 60, 61, cores, which are not combined with the CPUs cores and are seen by the computer as a different computers cores.  They are also only compatible with certain motherboards given in a list by Intel.  Intel also gives I think 3 requirements for a motherboard to be compatible, but I'm not sure I understand them 100%, so if you could help with that, that would be great.  Also, if you could give me a one or two sentence definition of parallel processing/computing, that would be something I can't seem to find.  Intel also says that a couple Xeon processors are compatible with the Phis, does that mean that other processors are not?  They also say they run their own embedded Linux, what do I have to do to get these things working on my system then?  Where do I learn the base assembly language these run on, that is supposedly similar to that of a CPU?  That's about where I'm at.

think of it as a company needing to do something like folding, or bitcoin mining. "doesnt really matter how the numbers get crunched, as long as they get crunched"

they get a whole bunch of these, ram them into servers, write custom software for it, and crunch numbers all day err' day.

Did you learn one thing or more from my previous post?  I'm kinda getting the feeling that you don't really know more about them than I do.

When you can find them for $200-330 I think they might be worth a try

Thought of using K10/K20 pairing with tesla to drive VDI and allocated rendering power?

I looked at them, but I've heard that phis are on the same assembly language vs cuda on nvidia. Also, I can find phis for $350 for two 31s1 I think they are.
