970 Vs. 390

Go to solution Solved by Fate,

I'd go with the 390. Similar performance at 1080p, better performance at higher resolutions, and twice the vram. Do you really need shadowplay if you have a 4790k?

Crossfire 390s on a 750 watt power supply should be fine without overclocking.

I'm finally going to get a GPU and stahp getting by on my HD4600. :) (All thanks to Fallout 4, BTW) and I was simply wondering what would be better. If i am not mistaken, the 390 ekes out a bit more performance, but the 970 has less power usage and heat output. I hope to eventually crossfire/SLI, and I have a 750w power supply (as seen down below in my sig).

Your guys thoughts?

(Sorry if this is like the 40th post on the topic)

All relevant info is appreciated. (Driver stability, quickness to be upodated, card stability, etc.

If you're gonna do SLI, the 390's 8gb of vram will be better than the 970s 3.5gb for sure I say the 390

If you're not a 100% sure you will SLI and find a good deal however, the 970 it's still strong and gives you access to stuff you might like that's extra like Shadowplay and Gsync (both have AMD equivalents but not quite the same or as good according to popular opinion)

I would only really miss Shadowplay by going team red, but for me, the 970 is 340$ and the 390 is 320$, saving money and losing shadowplay while getting more power is nice, but i'm still really on the fence over these two cards.

I've rather enjoyed my 970 so far. So much that I'm considering finding another for an SLI setup.

However. I have to heartily agree the VRAM limitations have made me hold off. I think the 390's higher amount of RAM is a definite reason to get it over the 970 if you game at 4K and possibly even 1440. Hard to say as I haven't had the chance to test a 970 at 1440 yet in person.

Heat-wise my Windforce 3X is amazingly cool, and it definitely OC's like a champ. Just my $0.02.

*Edit. I should point out that at 1080p the 970 is an absolute beast. And I've yet to go over 3GBs of usage.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

AFAIK the 390 uses the same amount of power and produces the same amount of heat as the 970.

The 390 is the way to go unless the 970 is significantly cheaper.

One thing i'm wondering is if my 750W power supply will be able to hold up a 390 xfire.

Good point on the shadowplay vs 4790k bit. I guess, since the 390 is cheaper, better, and still sexy af, I will go with that. I get paid on friday, so excited to get a GPU finally, and so excited for FALLOOOOOOUUUUUUUUT 4!!!!!!!!!!!!

Peace out.

It's gonna be weird, changing teams. Going from a GT335m, to an HD4600, to an AMD GPU.

if you dont care about energy use or heat output, this pretty much nails it.

And it's going to be awesome being able to play all of your games at ultra settings FeelsGoodMan

I know. My friend, whgen I built up his computer, bought a 970. I arrived at his house to hang out. He happened to be gone for a minute. I hopped on his computer.... AGH, 720p, 30fps just feels so inadequate. ;-;
