OK so I'm looking at upgrading from my 4150 to an i5 of some sort. I have an MSI B85-G41 PC MATE Mobo and an EVGA 500w 80+ PSU. I assume that to get a 4690k I'd need to get a new motherboard and PSU. Is the ability to overclock really worth the extra CPU price, mobo, and psu? Or should I just get the 4690 (or similar)? I'm really short on money since I can't get a job for medical reasons and am stuck on my parents good will (I'm only 16). So money is my priority. I'm still a little weary on overclocking, but if its THAT much better then I'll do it.

Certain B85 motherboards can overclock, also you 500W PSU should be more than enough for the i5-4690k as well as most mid tier GPU's.

EVGA W1 are worse than the CX - they are like the VS. Do you really think OCing on a thing like that will end well? >.>

Get a i5 4460 and don't touch clocks. As for PSU - get an XFX TS 550W if you want to be on the safe side - EVGA W1 are bad.

I had a G3258 @ 4.9Ghz with a GTX 760 on a CX500M with no problems. I think pretty much everyone on this forum over estimates the shittiness of certain products. The power supply is NOT BAD, it's just not high quality- will it support the hardware? yes, for how long? that much can't be said but with proper cooling and airflow you should have no issues getting a decent overclock on a 500w PSU.

In general overclocking doesn't show benefits until you have a very powerful GPU backing it, for things like gaming. An i5-4690 is a solid CPU, overclocking is just an extra for most people.

Thats what I was thinking. I only have a 270x so I was gonna save my extra pennies for a new GPU. But I've gotten this vibe that you aren't utilizing your i5 unless you have the "K" version, etc.

OCed Pentium and OCed 4690K are 2 totally different beasts - one is a cat, the other is a lion. :)

I've yet to see a game max my 4590 - you're fine with a 4460 and even a 980 Ti to go with it. Just get a better PSU at some point. W1 are bad ....

I wouldn't bother overclocking on a B85 motherboard even if it is capable of doing so.

Since there could be limits placed on the ratio for the CPU and Cache.

Our Grace. The Feathered One. He shows us the way. His bob is majestic and shows us the path. Follow unto his guidance and His example. He knows the one true path. Our Saviour. Our Grace. Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example. I second this. They also limit maximum voltage to 1.2v in most cases. And that's if it even let's you since some lock the option when a K sku is detected.

you dont need to over clock. i have a G3258(it was on sale for $50 so i didnt see why not) and a G3470(it was $35 and again why not.) and i use the G3458 for my gaming rig. why? i have no reason to overclock. i have the G3258 sitting in my living room pc that we use for movies and stuff. but if you have an option to get the i5 then go for it. im just a light gamer so i dont need to use a i5 or a CPU that over clocks.
