Hi Guys, So lets say I want to host a vpn server so that I can stream games and stuff without noob "hackers" tracking my ip and ddosing me or calling swat, pizza or strippers to my house. Would I have to build/buy a server and a special router to do this or is it cheaper to find a vpn service that is hosted nearby.

Thanks

either get a service like tunnelbear, or get a VPS on the cheap and put the necessary stuff on there.

i see you're from luxembourg, so online.net may be a good option to rent a server from.

they only do dedicated servers, but their cheapest option is €6/mo, which is hard to beat xD

EDIT: if you want to do it good: get two servers: one for your VPN connection, and a different one for your stream to go trough.

if the VPN gets DDoSed, your stream leaves trough a different end point, keeping it up. while also making it impossible to track your IP from the livestream connection.

If you're streaming from like twitch they can't track your IP unless you allow them, which is like Teamspeak 3, Skype, Hamachi and what not that directly connects 2 parties you don't need a VPN if you keep you're self secure. + VPN with a multiplayer game wouldn't be the best thing to do.

So if I do manage to rent 2 servers one for vpn and stream would I be able to change the router settings to enable the vpn and stuff since its hosted by another company.

You can try to host your own without any problem. OpenVPN is the best solution to this, no questions asked.

However, there are some pretty rocking solutions out there that are basically set-it-and-forget it.

I personally use Private Internet Access, where I pay about $40/year (a yearly subscription) and I'm loving it so much. I'm advertising a bit, but I highly recommend them. Since they're more established, they're going to have far less problems with DDoS and other attacks than you would running it on a VPS somewhere where you might not have protection from some script kiddie with a booter.

If you're in it for the DIY though, you can go rent a VPS at some cheap host (with a decent network) and read up some guides on how to use OpenVPN. It's fun, though I don't host my own VPN anymore out of other concerns.
