I got a EVGA 970 SSC ACX 2.0+ the other day, and running benchmarks, I haven't been getting results as good as I've seen others get.

In the last year or so, I've been upgrading a desktop from 2008. An old Dell 630i. Installed a new mobo, an i3 3250, 16GB RAM (4 x 4GB), and at first, an EVGA 750ti, but just a few days ago, I upgraded to the 970 ...

I also  installed a new PSU (Corsair, 750W, Bronze, modular design).

So, I'm not sure why I'm getting lesser performance results than I should be. It's possible that the CPU is bottlenecking me, but I feel like that shouldn't affect GPU benchmarking software like Unigine Valley or Heaven.

Here is what I'm comparing my scores to:

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2015/05/08/evga-geforce-gtx-970-ssc-acx-2-0-review/7

This person gets 4655 in Unigine Valley, yet I'm getting just south of 3700. Not sure how to get that extra performance...

If anyone could please clarify this, that'd be great!

UPDATE:

As per many recommendations, I upgraded my i3 processor (to an i7 3770) and that did it! Just ran the benchmark, and scored 4692 :D

I'm still surprised CPU would affect a GPU benchmark software, but nonetheless I am relieved. Thanks for everybody's help!

I'm pretty sure it's from bottleneck.

I'm pretty sure it's from bottleneck.

I'm not sure, though. I just ran Unigine Valley again, this time with Task Manager up on my second monitor and the CPU utilization never went above 53%. If my CPU were the bottleneck, wouldn't it have been "working" harder during the Benchmark?

Even running the Valley benchmark with resolution turned to the lowest 16:9, my score only increases to just over 3900, compared to the 4655 I should be getting, at 1080p.

Have you overclocked the card at all? Might not be overclocked right and hitting perfcap restrictions.

Just tried it myself my with my 290x and i get 3.7k instead of 3.9k in their result. They use reference 290x clocked at 1000/1250 and mine clocked at 1040/1250 so my card should be faster.

Their test setup look pretty normal with i5 processor, they did use 2400mhz RAM though i'm not sure if that will affect Valley or not.

I say, ignore that bench and go to our own LTT Valley thread and compare it with yours. We use Extreme HD preset.

Yes, but setting back to stock gives me 3744. A far cry from the 4655 I should be getting.

You didn't read my full post saying about perfcap restrictions, you can't just crank things up with the 970 because of the perfcap restrictions, if you keep GPU-Z open on the sensors page you'll be able to see what is happening. PS. Overclocking your RAM helps increase your score so it's just as important as raw core speed.

Not a chance. My Unigine Valley scores were the same for my 970 on my 3.6 GHz Xeon E3-1231v3, my 4.4 GHZ Pentium G3258, and the G3258 at the stock 3.2 GHz. Valley is strictly a GPU test.

no, its affected by cpu as well ._.

i also found out overclocking my cpu and ram to a higher mhz and lower timings increased it by quite a bit too.

as you can see,

  • Intel Core i5 3570K (operating at 4.2GHz – 42 x 100MHz)
  • Asus Maximus V Extreme motherboard
  • 2 x 4GB Corsair 2,400MHz DDR3 memory

these are their specs, the 2400 mhz will help ALOT. as well as an overclocked cpu. whats your cpu and ram. and you cant really rely on these benchmarks because my setup only hit 5481 at the very highest, and i have a 4690k @4.7 ghz, 1866 ram 9-10-9-28. which compared to my stock speeds, 4690k @ 3.5 ghz, 1600 mhz ram 11-11-11-38, i can expect up to 1000 score less.

  • 4 X 4GB Kingston HyperX FURY DDR3 RAM @ 1600 MHz 10-10-10-30
  • Gigabyte B75M-D3H motherboard

Looking at CPU-Z, it shows my DRAM frequency at only ~780MHz. Shouldn't this number be 1600? Running PassMark's PerformanceTest 8.0 also shows the ram only using 800MHz each...

800+800mhz=1600 mhz... each ram stick runs at 800mhz to a total of 1600mhz. on my cpu, the difference between 3.5 ghz and 4.7 ghz is about 600+ score... and 1600 to 1866mhz is another 100-200... so yea...

It might be the i3. However I am betting it is the new driver too. Do you have the new driver? It has cut my frame rates down extremely and I have a i7 4790k with 16GB of 1866 Mhz DDR3 RAM, and a 980 Ti. My system is no slouch.

I'm going to punch your face- IN THE FACE.

The Star Wars Battlefront one 358.50. If you have this driver, go into your device manager, double click your display adaptor, (graphics card) and click the roll back function. If it rolled back to Nvidia driver 355.98 then great. If you're like me and you clean install every single time, go to Nvidia's website and search for the 355.98 driver that is compatible with your card and OS. Oh, and make sure to do a clean install to remove the nasty 358.50 driver. If you get better frames because of rolling back to the older driver you can assume the new driver was sucking up all your performance. Luckily when you download drivers directly from Nvidia the driver has its own setup function that allows you to do a clean install just like you would in Geforce experience.

This helped by like a frame. So better, but still feel like I paid for more performance than that...
