How often should I upgrade?

I am planning on building a budget gamin pc. Here are the specs:

 

Intel Core i3 4170 3.7 GHz

ASUS H81M-K Micro ATX

2x4GB Kingston HyeperX Fury RAM

1TB Wesetern Digital Blue 7200 rpm

MSI GTX 960 2GB Gaming Edition

Cooler Master GX550 watt power supply

 

I have a 720p monitor and I am fine with playing games on 30-40 fps medium settings.

So when would I probably need to upgrade my pc?

When you feel ready. Don't just spend money to spend it. Only do it when you can't play your favorite game at 30+FPS

I have a 720p monitor and I am fine with playing games on 30-40 fps medium settings.

So when would I probably need to upgrade my pc?

Whenever you feel the need to. There is no "you need to upgrade when" defined, its all personal preference.

As long as you're using that monitor, maybe never. Get a 1080p monitor and then upgrade as needed.

 

I do have the budget to buy a 1080p monitor. But I feel that it would be a waste to not use it even if it's still functioning. I'm the type of guy that uses an item until the end of it's lifespan.

where the limit of "not doing its job anymore" is, is up to you.

 

The next time that I would probably gonna upgrade my pc is 5 years from now. Will my pc still be good in in the next 5 years?

If you're good sticking with 720p and those framerates and settings, you should be good on a 960 for a very long time

This might surprise you, in some cases your monitor might be as important as your graphics card because It's amazing how much difference it makes to have a nice monitor. For me, I upgraded to an IPS panel before it was worth it for me to upgrade from a 650 Ti to a 760. I'm looking for another GPU upgrade soon because I know I can get more out of this monitor, but just make sure your monitor and GPU are balanced. A 960 will do everything you want it to at 720p for quite a while.

The only problem with upgrading your monitor is that it is the one component in your system where going higher end (more resolution) will actually decrease your performance :P

I have my main 1080p and a secondary 900p, trust me, you want to change to 10810p LOL.
