Why wouldn't they be backwards compatible? They have up to this point, and it would be stupid for them not to be. They can't expect everyone to upgrade, and it would result in a lot of angry consumers, and thus a loss of money.

its already been released that most cards (not all) will be forwards compatible but none backwards compatible.

ok so performance spike might have been a bit of a stretch but the new graphics cards with 4.0 wont be backwards compatible with 3.0  - so even no 'HUGE' performance spike it would still require a pretty much full system upgrade to buy a new GPU

Nah.. just like back when AGP was a thing, if for some reason PCIe 3 and 4 can't work together, cards will simply be produced in two variations.

I believe even a few were produced in PCI, AGP and PCIe variations at the same time.

It really won't be a problem at all.

But why? Is that even confirmed, or is it just another rumor?

"PCI Express 4.0 will utilize a new connector, but the specification will be backward compatible mechanically and electrically with PCI Express 3.0, which means that it will be possible to use today’s add-in-cards in PCIe 4.0-based systems, but future AICs will not work with PCIe 3.0."

It's impossible to predict what's gonna happen in 2 years.

Absolutely agree with that. It's tech sector after all and we should wait and see what Pascal and Volta will bring.

As of now it might not be needed. That's why it's not out yet and we still have 1-2 years or more to wait for it.
