i know this is over budget, but if he will be upgrading in the future, a good mobo and a solid psu would be nice to have.

Also z97+ discrete gpu on that price, it simply cannot happen

I'm building a PC for a friend and he's a student wanting to spend about £300 on a budget Z97 build with room for upgrading to a intel i5 4690k some time in the future.

Ethn,

Tell your friend to save additional 120 GBP and get this computer build.

Getting this computer build will assure your friend can upgrade to an Intel i5-4690k or Intel i7-4790k processor in the future.

The i3-4170 dual core processor that I picked out has hyperthreading, which gives it a good boost in power and speed.

CPU: Intel Core i3-4170 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor  (£89.33 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: MSI Z97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  (£65.11 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  (£35.98 @ Amazon UK)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB WINDFORCE Video Card  (£95.68 @ Amazon UK)
Case: NZXT Source 210 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  (£34.98 @ Amazon UK)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 620W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  (£59.34 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £419.12
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

In my opinion he should still go with the pentium if he's planning to upgrade in a few months

That's fine. I am sticking with my selection of the i3 processor.
