Is it worth it to buy the D5500 or should I just get the D3300?

You won't be (probably) satisfied with D3xxx series, as I was not.

Got D3200 just to get into new level photo, but in a month I realized it's all crap.

So I bought D7000. Maybe you will be fine even with D5200.

D5xxx series has many functions, that you won't use.

Summary: get D5500.

UPD: also mind that you're going to buy some gear (lens, filters, bag, flash etc.) for this cam, so feel free to add like $100 to your budget.

I use a 5200. I have my complaints, however, it is a budget camera and judged as such it is excellent. I got mine for CAD $600 with 2 lenses and a bag. The HDR sucks a big one, just so you know. Here is an example:

Intel Core i7 4770k - 2x Geforce GTX 780 - MSI Z87 MPower Max - Corsair H60 - 8GB Avexir Core Series MPower Yellow + 4gb no-brand DDR3 - Corsair Obsidian 750d - AData XPG SX900 256gb SSD - Seagate Barracuda 3TB (7200 RPM) - Hitachi 250GB 2.5in HDD (3200 RPM) - WD HDD 160GB extracted from iMac via black magic (no specified RPM) - ASUS VG248QE 144HZ 3d Vision Monitor - Logitech G602 - Ducky Shine 3 TKL - AKG 172 HD Headphones - Xperia z2 - Sony Noise canceling earphones -  Nikon D5200 With Bundled Lenses - Windows 7 Home Premium - Blue Snowball iCE - Acer Aspire X with a broken case, AMD A6, and Raijintek Aidos CPU heatsink

Sorry, mate, but there is an option to switch on or off HDR mode, nothing else I can do. I did not do it myself manually. I am too much of a noob for that.

Stop relying on the camera to do things for you, if the internal HDR mode is not capable, learn how to manually bracket a shot and merge it in post.

Both are more or less Nikon's entry level cameras, read the reviews on DPReview, compare the specs, figure out if the D3300 is enough for what you need to do or does the D5500 have features you need. And also consider the budget for buying accessories, maybe spending less on the D3300 will let you buy an additional lens or speedlight or something else.

I would go for the D5500. The D3xxx series aren't that great in my honest opinion. I have the D5100 paired with a 35mm f.18g lens and it works fantastic! One complain I have is the noise performance though, apart from that, it's an amazing camera. Well, I can't really complain as it's an enthusiast camera level. Hoping to pick up the D750 soon.

If the internal mode is crap, it is useful information for OP because they might want to use the internal HDR.

The internal HDR of most cameras are crap.  The D5500 only combines two jpeg images to produce internal HDR.  True photographers who do HDR photos do not use internal mode.

So mentioning that a camera's internal HDR sucks is irrelevant, because everyone who does HDR does it manually.

If internal HDR was important to OP, I'm sure they would have mentioned it.

Besides that, internal HDR in cameras us almost always very underwhelming and in some scenarios even laughably bad.
