Hello

I want to raid 0 two old hdd's that I have.   I have a Toshiba 480GB 7200 RPM Sata 2 and a WD Black 500GB 7200 RPM Sata 2 hdd's.

They are about  five years old and came out of old computers.  I checked the drives before and they are both healthly according to Windows and have a few years worth of write and read left on them.

I have a MSI Z97 Gaming 7 motherboard.  I have a 250GB  ssd, a 500GB ssd, and a 1TB WD Blue hdd connected.  With the optical drive, I am using four out of eight SATA 3 ports. My last two ports are Asmedia.

How do I set up raid for the  two older hdd's?

He may still be able to do a Raid 0, it would merely limit the larger drive

I'm not sure if switching from IDE/AHCI to RAID will effect your boot drives but first you have to enable RAID in the BIOS under SATA controller, then you have to boot into the Intel Raid Configuration by hitting... I think its CTRL + i and then you would go into the utility, create the RAID and specify the 2 new drives as members. It may not work, but you could try it.

EDIT: On a side note, for simplicity's sake, you could simply "RAID" them in windows through the disk manager. Not as fast or feature packed but will work on a currently running PC.

-snip-

I would keep the drives separate. The drives are old and Raid 0 just isn't worth it. Also, the WD black isn't made to be placed in a RAID array. You may lose the array as soon as the WD Black tries to recover an error (Doesn't have TLER support like the Reds do).

If the last two ports are what you plan to use to RAID the drives, I really would say it's not worth it since the ASmedia RAID is kind of iffy at times. If you're using Intel RAID, you just need to set them to RAID in BIOS / use Intel's Raid configuration to set them up.
