Why are you upgrading to a 980TI from a 970??

980 + TI > 970

I understand that the 980TI is a better card, but the 970 is a very good card.

Depending on what he is doing, the 980ti may be a waste of money.

Yes. For me its unreasonable to buy same gen card when it still performs well. But thats how I roll.
