Have I been overclocking without realizing it?

I originally posted this on /r/techsupport but apart from a single upvote I didn't get much of an answer. I wonder if you guys could help me out a bit more.


So, I'm running an i7-5960X in an asus X99-DELUXE/U3.1 motherboard and in my initial setup of the bios I decided to put the EZ system tuning to asus performance without actually giving any thought to what it would do (I just figured I don't need to put any stops on the system). Now from what I read the i7-5960X boosts only to 3.5GHz but here's a readout from HWMonitor that I only noticed today:

Apparently I'm boosting to almost 4GHz? I was kinda surprised previously that the CPU would heat up close to 60C (despite being water cooled) so I wasn't keen on overclocking it but (if I'm thinking right) it only heats up so much since it's overclocking already?


I started paying attention to clock speeds after OC'ing my 980ti to 1460MHz and gaining some headroom there, and when I was rendering out a project in Keyshot today I took a glance at CPU clock speeds and did a double take. So do I have this right, is the motherboard overclocking my CPU?

if you were using XMP profiles

 

the base clock will increase to 125MHz

 

so you got a 1GHz OC

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

two possibilities: 1. u got really lucky and got a awsome 5960X  2. asus performance software has OCed ur chip (it did on my maximus formula so far so good however, I have a water cooling loop thou), If your temps never go over 60 i would not worry about it.

You own the biggest baddest chip that can be overclocked and you aren't doing it? Also that boost clock is what It can hit on all cores I do believe. This is only for 6 of the 8. It will clock higher on the cores being used if it can.

I love the idea of overclocking this chip but I absolutely refuse to push it over 60C. There will be countless hours where I'm gonna have it pegged at 100% load and I honestly don't feel like losing it to thermal damage. I initially thought that maybe it was the thermal compound (it's the pre-applied one that comes on the H110i GT) but after looking around I found most reviewers reporting that the chip ran between 32C to 35C idle and ramped up to around 60C on load, which is pretty much what I'm getting. But after seeing the clock speeds I kinda started wondering, since how the hell am I getting so close to 4GHz? Anyway, I pegged it for 10min with Prime95 so that you can see it better:

download the Ai Suite from Asus

 

you should be able to see the BIOS settings

If you don't have an air cooler OC it yourself as this is a weak way of the MOBO "safe" OCing it
