Gtx 980 or Titan

toxicnos

Hello, so I was on my local classifieds and saw several GTX 980s for $600 and a titan (not black or x) for $600. Could someone please tell me which one performs better and which one you recommend I should buy.

See if they have a 980ti.  It will perform better than both of those.

980 Ti - if not available, then Titan or Fury - Fury is 560$ and beats the Titan steadily.

Titan is better than 980ti and 980 and basically everything else.  Unless you're doing some 4k gaming and want to try and "future-proof" (not possible, but you can prolong upgrading) i would get titans. On 4k benchmarks I've been looking on, the titan and 980ti go from a 4-5fps difference at 1080p, to a 10-20 difference in 4k, with the titan X on top

Shipping sucks

No sense buying a 980. Get a 980Ti if you can stretch the budget abit. And don't go for Titan either.

First off you don't want the original Titan at this point, unless you're looking for the precision GPU computing on a budget.

I see up in Canada GTX 980 is in the low 700s new and a 980Ti is in the 900s, although I see a Zotac one on special for 850.

If there is a glut of GTX 980s you might try to talk them down into the low 500s, that would a reasonable deal.  Part of this though is what you're aiming to do with the GPU.  If you want a card that will carry you into the next generation then you might want to save for a Ti.  If you're just looking for something to carry you a bit into the next gen launches, the 980 would do that, but so would some even cheaper cards.  Frankly given a new R9 390X with 8 GB of RAM and some hardware features DX12 can use looks to be about 530 new on NCIX Canada, so to me a used GTX 980 would need to price itself competitively against that.

I don't actually get why though cause a 980ti is practically a Titan X just slightly less cuda cores and half as much Vram so is that to say the 980ti beats the titan X even when both are clocked the same? or would an overclocked titan X catch up with a 980ti again.

Of course, an Overclocked TitanX should catch up. But normal TitanX´s cant reach the speed of custom 980Ti´s. But no Question TitanX is still a super fast Card, but if you dont need 12GB VRAM a 980Ti would be the better choice.

Might end up having to RMA one of my stock clocked Titan X's anyway not having much luck with PC components lately :(

780 was a cut-down Titan IIRC

okay...lots of miss-informartion i'll correct guys.

The original Titan was a cut-down GK110 GPU in that it had 14 out of the possible 15 SMX units enabled totaling 2688 cuda cores.

The GTX780 is even more cut-down in that it has 12/15 SMX enabled totaling 2304 cuda cores

The GTX780ti and Titan BLACK where the fully enabled GK110 cores with 15/15 SMX units enabled totaling 2880 cuda cores (192 cores per SM)

NOW: the GTX980 is a fully fleged GM204 core which is faster than ANY of these GPU's we've talked about in the kepler family, end of the story.

If you check specifications you'll see that the GM204 GPU only has 2048 cuda cores, but they are maxwell cores and therefore are faster, you'd need 3000+ kepler cores to outperform this GPU. The maxwell based GTX908 is also noticeably more energy efficient.

yeah, like...quite a bit more cash actualy for example the asus Strix GTX 980 is 474$ right now and the Asus Fury is 570$

so it's 20.253% more expensive for an 8% faster GPU with lesser features, next to no overclocking headroom, and higher power consumption and heat output? ...not thanks!

http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-980-vs-AMD-R9-Fury/2576vs3509

you can overclock the GTX980 A LOT and once properly clocked it will match and outperform the fury depending on the game and you've saved 100$...

780 was a cut-down Titan IIRC

What Nanosuits had said, Titan BLACK was the full power chip, 780Ti, Titan, and 780 were all cut down or handicapped someway

Titan Black=780Ti>Titan>780 (but 780Ti only had 3GB of ram, so Titans could outperform it in somecases in some games like skyrim modding and Titans are titans but 780/780Ti could have aftermarket versions that could OC above the Titans and get better performance sometimes)

 okay...lots of miss-informartion i'll correct guys.

^Couldn't have put it better myself,   just a few other notes I put above, but yeah GTX 980 is OP killing more Titans than Mikasa Ackerman
