I'm thinking of crossfiring 290s (at stock), but I'm wondering what single card performance they would be comparable to. A 980 Ti?

It all depends on the game.. Some games have great scaling others don't..

2x 780ti is what I have, it's the same as 290x crossfire, 780ti sli is stronger than a 980ti slightly

If you are running at stock clocks. 2 290s will beat a 980ti by 10-20% in cfx optimized games. If you are running overclocked(1200mhz on the core is good), 2 290s will blow the 980ti in cfx supported games. Other than that, 1 290 is around 50-70% a 980ti and it really depends on the game. But overall, much more cores, ROPs, texture units, etc. when working together is better.

Current PC: Origin Millennium- i7 5820K @4.0GHz | GTX 980Ti SLI | X99 Deluxe
