Don't try to convince me that I can't run an i7 4790k and 2 980ti's with this psu, but would this psu be better than buying a lesser rated psu for this setup, like a gold 850w?

Not really. Platinum mostly means it runs a bit cooler.

I know, and it's not TOO much of a difference, also I think Silver doesn't exist anymore

 

It was more that you said it mostly means it runs a bit cooler, which it doesn't. Granted, some components of a power supply have higher efficiency with lower temperatures, though it's not the case with all of them; Platinum mainly means that the power supply is more efficient,  and not that it necessarily means it runs cooler..
