If they are running exact same version of windows (both updated to current) with same programs open, wouldn't they be about the same? Or much nearer atleast..

Flatmate is running the same build as me (installed Win10 at the same time, I've configured his laptop myself and we're pretty much running the same things in background). His usage with 4 Chrome tabs (facebook, twitter, youtube and wowhead) is around 4.2GB

My usage with the same 4 Chrome tabs is 3GB.

He's got alot of reserved memory for the iGPU/dGPU while I don't (don't even have an iGPU)

As far as I can tell it varies from machine to machine

Both of mine have Dedicated GPUs. Windows 10 must vary a lot more than 7,

Win 7 has had years and years worth of updates, tweaks and improvements.

Win 10 is still in its infancy and there are many kinks that still need to be ironed out (and I'll admit to that)

Regardless, as long as it doesn't affect my activity I'm not bothered by a slightly higher memory usage

I'll see how that goes, I was hoping to never need my 24GB of ram..

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

windows will scale its memory usage depending on available memory.

on 4GB systems, windows will use about 2GB, scaling back to 1 in high usage scenarios.

on 8GB systems, windows will use about 2-3GB, scaling back as before.

on 16GB systems, windows will gladly eat up 4GB, and i havent encountered a scenario where it needed to scale back :P

i've seen referneces of windows using up to 6GB on 64GB systems.

EDIT: this is tested on vareous updates of W7 and W8.1. i'm too poor to have a decent testing enviroment of my own...

That makes sense then. One has 4GB one has 24GB.

windows is very smart in optimizing itself to the hardware its running on.

on low memory systems it'd be bad if windows loaded in all its resources, filling up the entire memory.

on the other hand, it'd be stupid for windows to save on system usage when you have a small supercomputer at home.

more stuff in the background on a desktop usiually, it getts cut out from the laptop because of power

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

"Here is some advice that might have gotten lost somewhere along the way in your life.

#1. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

#2. It's best to keep your mouth shut; and appear to be stupid, rather than open it and remove all doubt.

#3. There is nothing "wrong" with being wrong. Learning from a mistake can be more valuable than not making one in the first place.
