Now can anyone please tell me what the hell a "heel of rye" is?

 

All I found was that it was this dark bread

 

"This bread happens to be brown, but there is also white bread, in the refrigerator, and a heel of rye you got last week, round as a full stomach then, now going moldy"

well, heel on bread means the end length-wise of the bread, most covered by crust, resembling a 'heel.' And if I didn't know any better, rye is a type of bread. I can only assume its talking about the heel of a loaf of rye bread.

My guess is that it's the end of a loaf of bread.
