so my question is can i use two routers in a series ?

so i have a modem/router that came with my fibre optic plan so its downstairs, we have ethernet jacks in almost everyroom in my house to wired isnt a problem, the thing is that in my room upstairs and to the side of where the router is i dont get that great of signal on my phone and such, so i have an older dlink router, would i be able to hook up the dlink router to the isp modem/router combo and then plug my pc into the dlink and run wifi for upstairs off of the dlink and when downstairs run of the combo unit like a range extender ?  sorry if this doesnt make too much sense i dont know much about networking,         so basic rundown plug the dlink router into the router/modem downstairs so i have better signal in my room for my devices

If you could afford it, I'd just get an AP

Most routers support AP(Access point) mode in which it will just relay everything to the primary modem.

Alternatively you could set the modem in bridge mode and connect everything to your router.

copypasta-ing from a topic eariler today.

- configure the device to operate within the same subnet as your other router

- give the device an unique IP address in that subnet, that lies outside your main router's DHCP range

- turn off dhcp on the d-link box

- connect it to your network with a LAN port. (leave the WAN port un-used.)

You can setup the secondary router in bridge mode basically and have a wireless access point and a switch. Only thing is you need an ethernet connecting to go from your main router to your secondary router, this way instead of using a range extender you get not degradation in speeds when your repeat a signal.

ya the ethernet conection is no problem since my house is wired with 2 ethernet jacks in every room with cat 5e cables running into the walls going downstairs to where the main router is

To configure it in bridge or wireless AP mode since it can vary between routers you need to directly connect to the secondary router first when setting everything up before moving it and putting it in it's location, you will need to specify an IP address for it though IIRC.

I live in a 3-Story house and I am using a Cisco E3000 and I have an old-school D-Link router that the tenants in the basement can use, not sure if this is actually beneficial, anyone want to shed some light on this?

That will work. If you want them to be on the same subnet as you are then simply use the LAN ports on the D-Link as this will act as a switch. You may need to statically assign an address to the second D-Link and disable any DHCP services running on that device. If you want them to be on a separate network use the WAN port of the D-Link to connect back to your cisco device and assign it an address manually including defualt gateway and DNS server. The remaining functions of the router can most likely be left at default however you may need to change the DHCP server scope so you do not have any conflicts with the first cisco network.
