So recently my dad upgraded his PC and I was going to take his old one and put ubuntu on it and run a plex media server. But the issue i'm having is that it is saying bootmgr error whenever I try to boot from the USB drive. I have formatted the drive in fat32 and used the linuxusb tool to make it bootable, and i'm still getting this error. Any help would be appreciated!

Are you actually trying to boot from the USB stick or is it trying to boot off the hard drive still?

Also, if this is a prebuilt with Windows installed, the OEM may prevent things from running. I've had 2 desktops that flat-out refuse to boot a Linux USB but will gladly boot a Windows USB.

If you're getting BootMgr is missing, then its going past the USB boot and trying to boot a disk volume that has no boot sector (or your USB isnt actually bootable).

Make sure you definitely have set your Boot Priority correctly in BIOS.

Check your BIOS/POST and see if theres any option to boot from USB.

Have you tried partitioning the hard drive and booting Linux off of that? I think that will work, I do not have much experience with Ubuntu and stuff. I just know that is how mine is set up.

I like Rufus for making live usb's. Also, get a fresh ISO and verify it after you download it to make sure you've got all the bits (you know, don't want to make a usb with a broken file). HashTab on Windows works great.

I'm making the assumption that you're setting up the USB from windows.
