Hey LTT, i have decided to build a new rig.

For this build i have a total budget of $2000 AUD (excluding Peripherals)

The build is as follows:

CPU: I5 6600K

Mother Board: Asrock Z170 Extreme 4

RAM: Kingston Hyper X Fury 16 GB (8Gx2) 2400 mhz

GPU: GTX 970 Asus Strix OC

Case: Fractal design define

PSU: Corsair 80+ Gold RM 650 W

SSD: Samsung 850 PRO 256G

I am also looking for CPU cooling (preferably air cooling).

Altogether the build has cost around $1845. I'm posting here to look for some tips or potential changes to the build.

NOTE: As of the 18th of September $1 AUD = $0.73 USD.

EDIT: I'm building this PC for both gaming AND as a workstation.

Is it just for gaming? If so you probably only need 8gbs of RAM

The 390 is a better GPU overall and for sure has pretty good DX12 support, and more VRAM in case of future crossfire.

And the HAF XB EVO is like the best case ever

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Are you planning for SLI? I ask this because 750 watt is really really really not necessary. 650 is big enough.

Noctua coolers are really good, but you can also get good cooling with 212 evo.

Do you want to overclock? because if not (for some obscure reason) you should not buy a k edition cpu (they are pricyer) cpu might be a bit overkill, though its a good idea if you want to have good upradability in the future

I don't know exactly why, but apparently there are no x99 motherboards available in AUS, but the CPUs are available...

feel free to drop a 390 if you need to fit in other stuff.

The xeon has twice the threads of the i5, plus skylake is hardly an improvement overall from haswell

A xeon is not that great for gaming, it doesn't really overclock that well, and the i5's floating point speeds are much better. If you want to render video or something then i would choose a xeon, but for a gaming pc with overclock in mind... really the i5 is better. also the xeon your talking about works with lga1150 and the i5 works with the 1151, so better upgradability in the future from the more recent /common socket. Also you don't really need more than 4 threads for gaming. I really don't see why you would pay more for the xeon... and skylake isnt really an upgrade for gaming, but if you don't want to get a skylake, get an haswell i5 or i7, not a workstation cpu!

xeon doesnt overclock at all, but its boost clock is from 3.4 to 3.8, so yeah, it will outperform an i5 in most cases.

The guy said he wanted to oc. you can easily get to at least a stable 4ghz on the 6600k, more if you want to. overclocked, the i5 will outperform the xeon while gaming. that said, as a workstation cpu, the xeon will outperform the i5. I think he has to choose between a rig that's more gaming or workstation oriented

just so you know, the 123x V3 is a haswell i7 without the iGPU. DX12 uses more than 4 threads and to be honest, new games are made for 8 core consoles. 1151 is way too expensive and delivers little to no advantage over 1150. If you want to save a little more on the CPU for a better GPU, get a 4460.

hem. the i5 6600k floating point speeds ARE higher than the xeon e3 1231 v3 that was in question (or that was what my source said). and the price IS lower (although only by 6$ i admit). just had to defend myself  :P I agree with getting a 4460 though.

(if you can quote your source for the floating point speeds that would be great, not to criticise you, its because i always struggle getting this type of info :D )
