hem. the i5 6600k floating point speeds ARE higher than the xeon e3 1231 v3 that was in question (or that was what my source said). and the price IS lower (although only by 6$ i admit). just had to defend myself  :P I agree with getting a 4460 though.

(if you can quote your source for the floating point speeds that would be great, not to criticise you, its because i always struggle getting this type of info :D )

6600k FP ST > 1231 V3 FP ST

6600k FP MT < 1231 V3 FP MT

when calculating the price, did you count in the motherboard and RAM? You should, because you can't run it without them.

good point! and i guess what we learned about this argument is that really, both cpus would be great choices for the build, but i guess you are right about the mobo and ram being at a higher price. but did you think about this: if he got the xeon, he probably wants to orientate his build more towards a workstation, so he would be better off getting ecc ram and the mobo that comes with it, which then become more expensive... but then we would argue about a hypothetical build change from a hypothetical decision to change his cpu... so let's just not fight about it...  :)

I think you missed the point. For whatever reason, Intel is selling i7s without iGPU at a lower price. These parts are called 123x Vx and are the better option tahn any i7 (up to k series). Actually, if I were building a CPU workstation, I would go for the i7 and left out any external GPU.

Long story short, Intel's naming is fked up and we all need to do real research before buying.
