Ok. So the motherboard I'm looking at for my new build (MSI Z97 Gaming 5) has a scant number of USB ports. I have a a usb mouse, usb keyboard, usb adapter for my wireless 360 controller, usb adapter for my wireless headset, usb printer. I'm out of ports. Is it feasible or advised to use the PS/2 combo port and adapt my mouse/keyboard to use it in order to free up space in case I need more usb in the future? Or should I just opt for a usb 3.0 pcie x1 card and be done with it? Opinions please.

get something like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Port-USB-2-0-Header-Host-Adapter-Rear-Panel-Cable-Holder-Bracket-Motherboard-/400938172566

Your mobo should have a couple of USB 2.0 headers on it.

Also, your case should have 2 USB 3.0 or 2.0 ports on it that plug into these headers.

EDIT: To answer the original question, no, it is not advisable to use an adapter UNLESS your keyboard specifically came with one, in that case that means its designed to work in ps2 mode as well and then go ahead and use it.

When in doubt, re-format.

iirc, they're "optimized for ultra low latency"

another really popular thing is to have "usb ports for DACs"
