Quick RAM advice

Go to solution Solved by Imakuni,

Although I question the need the for 16gb (and the orange + red mismatch), there would be no problem in using different RAM. In their core, they are pretty much the same thing, only the heatsink is changed.

Since they have same timings / frequency, they should both run at stock speeds. But if one of them was better than the other, that one would just slow down to match the weaker stick.

So I'm looking to do my first upgrade on a 2014 build getting ready for fallout 4. First course of action is getting a new SSD (my last one is the 840 evo and it had issues - the whole nand thing. I tried to intall those fixes but my speeds are still suffering slightly). I'm planning on getting the 850 evo and formatting the 840 evo to then use as a gaming SSD (unless you guys had better recommendations on the SSD I should get / what I should use my 840 for).

The second upgrade is going to my RAM and this is the heart of my questions. I know that generally the rule is to stick with the same RAM you already have in your system (PCpartpicker list below). Honestly It doesn't really matter to me just kinda curious if I could get away with using these ares sticks seeing as my build is black and orange. They have the same latency, timing and speed. Again if you guys say the word against it then In wont be too heartbroken, it would just look awesome!

Thanks guys!

There are red highlights in the system :) I'll post picks when all is done, thanks for the advice!

Yes the RAM and SSD are the only upgrades. Why?

My 770 shouuuuld run it fine on high not max (fingers crossed). It's just a matter of a ~190$ upgrade vs a 800$ + upgrade. Just something nice and cheap to squeeze a bit more out of what I've got :)

8gb of ram is enough to run games, I would advised on upgrade gpu/cpu soon

The thing with the RAM upgrade too is that I have dual monitors I have just finished playing Witcher 3 and I couldn't watch shows on the side due to RAM constraints. So even if I have a little ram left over, maybe a little RAM drive ?!?! Haha.

On an aside which would you recommend as a best price to performance while still keeping the same motherboard and still managing to gain some FPS?

I wouldn't get another Samsung ssd at this point, imo the way they have mishandled the 840 evo issue makes me want to steer well clear of them.

I've had good experiences with my bunch of crucial drives

Intel 4670K /w TT water 2.0 performer, GTX 1070FE, Gigabyte Z87X-DH3, Corsair HX750, 16GB Mushkin 1333mhz, Fractal R4 Windowed, Varmilo mint TKL, Logitech m310, HP Pavilion 23bw, Logitech 2.1 Speakers
