So I got a used Asus VG248QE and I can't wait to try running games at over 60fps. However, I learned that a simple HDMI to HDMI connection is not enough to allow the screen to go past 60fps, so I pulled out the packaged dual link DVI to dual link DVI connectors that the monitor came with, but when I unplugged the HDMI cable and allowed the screen to run through DVI connection, strange things started happening. For example, I wasn't able to open Fallout 3, which was running at the background, nor the League of Legends client. So I closed Fallout 3 and reran it while setting the maximum FPS to 144hz. I was able to run Fallout 3 for around a minute before the screen blacked out. I was able to alt tab which shows that the system is still running, but I can't get out of Fallout 3. I tried closing it, but it wouldn't close, and task manager wasn't able to pop up, so I did a hard shut down on my PC. After I rebooted it, the computer proceeded to the windows startup scene but then blacked out. The PC was still running, evident by the fan noise, but nothing was showing up. I was forced to plug in the HDMI cables again and there was no issue, but whenever I try to set the display type back to DVI, there would be no signal. I also tried plugging the DVI cable out and back in again to make sure that it's properly connected, but it was to no avail. I'm thinking of getting a display port cable but what do you think is the issue?

EDIT: Also, the first time I switched to DVI mode, the desktop was empty of icons and I couldn't open anything. I had to do this via display settings on Windows using the second display while having both DVI and HDMI cables plugged in. However, when I try switching to DVI input through the monitor, it would say "DVI no signal".

GPU-Drivers up-to-date? Or you should go displayport.

I successfully hacked 127.0.0.1! Now I cant turn on my computer :/

GPU drivers are up to date.

However I kinda did this with the automatic driver update search option in device manager, so I'm not really sure if I really got the latest drivers updated. I also did not find any driver support for Windows 10 on the Asus webpage for the monitor.

You dont need drivers for your monitor, just for your GPU. Since you can't trust Windows Auto Update, search on the page of NVIDIA/AMD for the Drivers and install them.

Maybe the DVI Port is only SingleLink DVI-I (analog/digital signals) so, you HAVE to use the Displayport/MiniDisplayport ports. Theres no way arround.

First: make sure you are using the dual link dvi port.

I don't know if this applies to 280X, which is a 7970 ghz edition "rebrand" but on 7970 cards, the TOP DVI PORT (towards the top of the case on a normal ATX build) is the dual link port and the bottom is the single link port, although if you were using the single link, you would not be able to select higher than 60hz anyway, unless you went down to a NON GPU SCALED lower resolution (e.g. 1024x768@85hz would work if defined as a custom low resolution) but I'm getting off track.

Try the following:

1) download the newest AMD drivers

2) UNINSTALL the previous drivers from control panel/add remove programs.  Do not reboot yet.

3) download Display Driver Uninstaller

http://www.wagnardmobile.com/forums/

Install and run it in SAFE MODE.  You can mash F8 before wnidows starts loading to get the safe mode boot menu.

Then reboot and install the video drivers.

And please use ONE MONITOR.

Get ONE Monitor working with the driver clean install, as I gave the instructions for, before you start tinkering with adding extra things that can break stuff.

DDU has a "Restart in safe mode" button that when you click it, your PC restarts in safe mode and launches DDU.

OK, so when I woke up this morning I tried turning on my PC but it won't recognize HDMI even though I didn't do anything to the HDMI connection. I hard rebooted my PC to find that "overclocking failed, press F1 to run setup".

Also, I just found out that my reference Gigabyte HD7970 has a DVI-I slot.

You'd have to google around to find out if your DVI-I port(gpu) is duallink or not. It's the cable that matters in this scenario if your input is duallink.

i5-4690k | GALAX HoF 980Ti | MSI Z97 Gaming 3 | 2xHyperX Fury 8GB @ 2133MHz | 2x240GB Kingston SSD in RAID-0 | 500GB Samsung 850 EVO | NZXT H440 | Corsair H75 | Corsair RM750

Do not go gentle, into that good night.

This error usually comes when overclocking Baseclock, so set Baseclock to 100 (BCLK controls everything, maybe also GPU/PCIe and causes malfunction)

I took a look at my graphics card's DVI port and found out that there's 4 small holes next to the 8 pin, and I looked up a DVI connector guide and concluded it's a DVI-I Dual Link channel. My cable does not have the 4 pins, so it's a digital only dual link DVI cable.

OK, so I got a display port cable and everything seemed to work out well. I fixed the overclocking failed issue by turning the RAM speed back to 1333mhz (I tried cranking it to 1600mhz thinking that my RAM would allow it since that's the maximum speed). However, when I tried playing Fallout 3, the same problem repeated itself. The game froze and i can alt tab but I can't see my mouse. I wonder what's the issue this time... it's probably not the game since I managed to proceed the scene without any issues with my old monitor.

EDIT: It seems like the game ran without any issue if I limit the FPS to 60.
