Question to Linus about Linustechtips.com

Hey Linus, I have watched all of your content for a long time now and enjoy it thoroughly, you have helped teach me a lot about computers and peripherals. I was just wondering why you don't use linustechtips.com not only as a community site where you build a helpful community, but a base where you can upload all of your content, a place where no matter what happens, youtube being replaced by the next big thing, people always know where they can go to find you. I don't forsee youtube being replaced but I didn't see Myspace being replaced either, also youtube not successfully filling your subscriber's mail box with your new content is pretty sad and uploading your content to linustechtips will ensure that people can always see your new content. Uploading your content to your site would most likely draw a bigger community to linustechtips as well. I'm not implying for you to stop uploading to youtube, but rather upload to both, maybe a tab labled "Content" or something more eIoquent. I just think you could become more independent and have sponsors that are going directly through you and your site as opposed to going through you and youtube. Just a thought, i'm sure I don't comprehend the difficulties in doing this or money it would cost. Love your videos and content please keep making more.

Why not go straight to his youtube channel ???

He states that sometimes users don't get the full emails about when he uploads new content. I know for a fact that The WAN Show never shows up on my subscription emails and i have to look for them.  I think what he is suggesting is a great idea but i think the shear costs and the equipment to store all his videos would be the fiirst issue. Next would be the bandwidth upload download so 1000 people could watch at the same time.

Nice idea but i cant see it being cost effective at the moment.

he could always upload the vids to mirror sites though.

and just embed the videos here.

Because he get's money from youtube and the majority of the people who watch his videos is not on the forum they just see his videos in the feed and click them. Plus how many new people are going to find the linus media group community if he does not upload to youtube. Pretty much everyone who are subscribed to him found the channel while searching for a specific product in youtube, personally i don't see any reason to leave youtube big enough to compensate for the negative effects it will have to leave the platform.

EDIT re-read your post and saw you said he should not stop uploading to youtube

The best soulution IMO is that he should have a subforum with links to youtube and we could use the topics for each video to discuss in a better way than youtube chat (which is full of morons)

there is a linus tech tips tabs on the top left

they should have a page with his new videos embedded from youtube to that area

@11k I'm not saying to leave youtube at all, only to uplaod to both. I like the idea of a place I can go to view all of Linus' content, and know that I am seeing all of his content, and that very same place being a helpful community.

How about a layout similar to overclock.net where there's a slideshow of content at the top, then a list of forums/threads below it.

I'm pretty sure they would have to ditch IP .Board in order to do this, and migrating was kind of a pain, so my suggestions may not be the best option.

Also I agree that uploading links to youtube may be a good option and certainly a better solution, I think it would be better to not have to go through youtube at all. Upload to both but at the same time Linustechtips.com could become more independent.

Although I don't know if that's cost effective.

word of mouth might allow that in a few YEARS. And only IF linus finds another way to make money off his videos other than  having to go through youtube.

I still think he should embed his youtube videos to this site though.

I can tell you now that they will never be directly uploaded to this site. LMG makes a large proportion of its income off of YouTube Ad revenue - if there is suddenly another area of upload which a large proption of the community could watch without having to watch ad's then the income would drop dramatically.

However with that being said, when we finally get around to putting the homepage online, YouTube videos will be embedded into it.

There will be a homepage? Will it look like anything I suggested earlier?

Here's what I said earlier:

We haven't quite finalised the homepage but there will most likely be YouTube feeds, Twitter feeds, livestream countdown, member reviews and a few other things.
