Here's the build that I'm going to do. I was also getting a HDD for extra storage, but I don't think I need 1 TB. I was wondering which one is reliable, cheap, and around 250-500GB? The 1TB one I had on this list was $50 and I just figured I could save myself like $25 on extra storage that I won't be using.

All hard drives click. It's the head moving left and right - unless you're talking about something else.

Get whatever drive YOU feel confident about which offers a decent amount of storage for the price. For me, that would be Toshiba, WD, HGST and SOME Seagate drives (drives with 2 year warranties or more).

Does the Cache of 8mb 16mb and so on matter much?

Some people say it doesn't. I don't think it has a huge effect all around, though with my Toshiba MD(some model name), which has 128MB of cache, I saw very good sequential number, just over 220MB/s. Though obviously, small file performance is what matters the most if you ask me. I wouldn't make a huge deal out of cache size.

i have heard wd blacks are really noisy and make weird clicking noise

Depends on the drive tbh. Some drives are noisy, some aren't, it's basically a lucky dip. My WD Black is basically silent while my previously mentioned Toshiba MD drive screams when dealing with smaller files... Well, it doesn't scream, but it is noisy.

The drive is fine but the price/GB is stupidly high for a HDD. It's like 8 cents per GB.

yeah i agree, but this si what happpens when you go to lower capacity drives, its like buying wholesale

How in the world..

search  all hard drives, raise minimum size to 320 gb sort by lowest cost and there ya go

buying wholesale

Turns out that one isn't even compatible. xD I might just stick with the original one as it's sata 6 if that means anything, at least I know it will work. -.-. if anyone needs an extra 700GB let me know xD

my bad didnt realize it was pata, you can get sata versions of the same drive for about the same amount

https://pcpartpicker.com/part/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd3200aajs

but its only sata 3gb/s if you want 6 gb/s you will be going up in price

~snip~

Hey there XtraToothpaste,

I could recommend checking out WD Blue and WD Green for simple regular storage. Both work great and are pretty inexpensive. WD Green is an energy-saving drive that works cool and quiet while WD Blue is designed for everyday computing and can handle a bit heavier workloads compared to WD Green. Here's more info if you'd like to check it out:

Pretty much any HDD would work as long as it has a SATA connection. HDDs rarely exceed 200MB/s in transfer speeds so it wouldn't matter if you plug them in a SATA2 (3Gb/s) or in a SATA3 (6Gb/s) port. :)

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^

Thanks Captain! Yeah I didn't realize for HDD's SATA 2 vs SATA 3 isn't as big of a deal as it is for SDDs. I'll find my 320GB now and settle. :)
