I have a storage server that is running with 4 hdds in raid 5. I recently got a deal on 2 10gbe nics, so I plan on connecting my PC to my server to get better bandwidth using 10gbe.

However the servers motherboard only has one x16 slot and 3 X1 slots. My raid card is 4x and is in the x16 slot.

My new 10gbe nic is also x4. So how can I use this aswell as my raid card?

Current server motherboard is a msi h61m-p21 (http://www.msi.com/product/mb/H61MP21_B3.html) with Intel i3-2100 cpu. Other specs are in my sig.

I see it as 3 options:

1. Get a X1 to x4 adapter which will limit bandwidth but for now it's not like I will be using it all anyway. Or

2. Get a new motherboard and new cpu. Needs to be cheap $$ - is it worth it?

3. Try find a cheap second hand h61 board to replace it.

All input welcome! Thanks!

Depending on you cpu, and card specs it should work, but not at its max performance ^^

it NEEDS x4 to run

it will not work if you attach it to an x1 slot even with an adapter

you must change your motherboard if you want both

I have seen many articles online saying it should run at reduced performance, are you sure?

Linus has a video on it: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fZed5r9tXHQ

if youre going to reduce its performance why not just use 1Gb ethernet...

That's that thing, will it reduce it that much or will I still be able to get say 5gbps which with my current hdd setups is plenty? I plan on upgrading the server eventually, it's just if I can get away with the current one abit longer I will

PCIe x1 is only 250Mbps

even if you had 4 HDDs in raid 0 you would not get over 1Gbps

theres no point in using 10Gb connection

Gigabit is only 125MBps, my array can get around double that. I am moving to 10gbe, but I am just wondering if it's possible to use 1x slot for now.

You can try...just dont ruin your motherboard when cutting the 1x slot
