So a friend of mine is having issues with RAM in his pc. The dims work fine seperately in slots 1 and 2, but not in 3 and 4, but when he has them installed in dual channel mode, it won't even make it to bios.
What could be the issue?

Everything worked fine until he updated his bios and CPU

hardware in his system:
4790k

Asus Maximus VI Hero MB

GTX 980ti

Samsung EVO 840 250Gb

G Skill Trident 2400MHz 4Gb x2

EVGA Platinum 1000W PSU

The RAM probably isn't on the QVL list.  What you'll need to do is either replace the RAM with QVL RAM or go into the BIOS and set the timings, voltage, and speed manually and hope for the best.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

It worked perfectly in this build for over a year until I upgraded to a 4790k from a 4770k and had to update the BIOS version.

Now it won't even make it into the Bios

It has an XMP profile and worked fine prior to this

New processor, new memory controller, new BIOS, new profiles.  I'm telling you that the RAM isn't compatible with the motherboard in one capacity or the other.  Maybe the RAM itself has gone bad, but I don't think so myself.

He's going to  try forcing timings then. Thank you. Would hate to replace two perfectly good sticks after they have been working fine over a year.

Thats cool.  Let me know what he comes up with.  If you manually enter the timings I think it will work better (please dont forget voltages and speed).  Just let me know if it is successful or not and I'll be gald to keep on helping.
