Im in Canada too and 800 dollars got me a FX 6300, a decent full atx mobo, a decent PSU, no SSD, 8GB of ram and a R9 270X.

Yeah, shit's expensive, especially when you add up taxes.

That's all I can say for now; You are going to get a worse pc for that money than someone spending that money in the US. Don't expect a GTX 970 and a i7.

In fact he's lucky if he will be able to get an i5.

Would you be willing to get second hand parts? More often than not you can save a lot and as a result build a better gaming rig.

Well it's up to you.

Do you want to lose performance just bcuz nvidia.

Or do you want to go for the best option for your price bracket. Hell in my build if Nvidia had a better cheaper option I would have went for it.

but is there a big difference between the MSI Radeon R9 380 and a geforce near this price?

Well I assume you are looking at a 2gb 380 and a geforce 960.. which are comparatively priced in canada.. It depends in all honesty... if you want to OC the card or if you want it stock.  I would try to bump up to a 4gb 380.   What do you really hope to do with the PC.... what are your expectations and types of games you want to play?  Like I said I simply don't see value in buying a PC in canda with our dollar the way it is..
