Developing an NFC Chip

I recently had a great idea, and it requires the use of Near field communication, however I am not entirely sure how they work.  I know that they store information, don't requrie a battery, and can transmit over a few centimeters.  What I need to know is, how do i "program"(or whatever you do to the chip) an NFC chip to give it the information it stores, and to be read by a receiver.
