Hello, I'm using an old computer as a htpc and two days ago it shut down suddently. When i power it on seemed fine but after 2 minutes or so it shut down again and it kept doing this for the rest of the day... The CPU temps are fine, around 35-45 ºC which is normal for an old amd.

PSU voltages are also fine, maybe a little bit high... 3.4V, 5.25V, 12.13V

As soon as it happened i unplugged the hdd and the cd drive to prevent damage, also i tried to remove the gpu (it's a lowpower one, works without 6pin or 8pin, just pcie power). The readings without this parts are the same but i noticed that with less components attached to the psu the less the computer kept on. Intriguing...

Today I woke up and I power it on. It started up as it did before the issue and both the temps and voltages remain the same...

Can anyone offer some insight? Do I need to worry about frying my components? Would it be a good idea to change the psu?

Thanks in advance

Sorry for my english, I'm not very good at it and all the LMG staff slang doesn't help me improve it

How did you measure voltages? Software is horribly inaccurate and 3.4V is too high for the +3.3V rail - it allows a max of 3.360 and a min of 3.240
Use a digital multimeter to check

PSU is dead btw - remove it before it kills anything else

Oh, i went straight up to the bios, didn't know it wasn't accurate, i'll try it with the multimeter, thanks!

What do you mean it's dead? I know maybe it's risky, but now it's working flawlessly...

If it's doing that it means it has a faulty component - usually capacitor - that thing blows, it will make a dent in the case and probably go straight through the PSU casing and/or GPU/Motherboard

Well, i've just checked the PSU voltages with a multimeter and they're actually better than the bios one's.

5,16V

12,00V

3,37V

So I'm not sure if the psu is the problem...

3.37 is above specification. 3.360 is the max - anything post that will trigger Over Voltage Protection.

Nevermind. My memory tricked me.

It's just a very standard one, I don't have any photos of it but i'd  swear is not any particular brand...

Would you be able to take a pic?

Generic PSU != well-regarded reliability

Articflames.com it's not even a website anymore...

Generally when it comes to generic PSUs, if it has to say on the label and/or model number that it's an ATX PSU, it's garbage.
