Hub-Sensors-On-Wood-980x420.jpg

Now run for up to ten hours even if its power connection has died, and also supports a select array of offline functionality so that your smart home still works even if the internet goes down. SmartThings is adding video monitoring, initially in beta, with the ability to turn on a livestream of connected camera footage from your home or office, as well as have clips automatically recorded when motion or some other trigger occurs. There's also the launch of a Smart Home Monitor service, which pulls together things like break-in alerts, smoke and fire warnings, leak and flood notifications, and more, and pings out not only pop-ups on your phone but video clips to explain them, too. SmartThings will even store the video footage just before the alarm, so that you can rewind and see exactly what took place. Finally there's a new app for iOS and Android, which promises a more streamlined experience.

Storing the video before alarm means the camera is always recording. Hope there is no NSA backdoor

Interesting idea, not exactly how I would implement it though.

Which is why you should say 'fuck that' to smart homes. They give too much temptation for governmental 'security' agencies to abuse their power.

Well if I would do a smart home I sure as hell would not have it connected to the internet in any way, shape, or form.

Also then, good luck keeping it from being connected to the internet.

Snip off all wires for ethernet ports or wifi cards. :D

If its computerised, it can be bugged or broken.

I could wrap the entire system in copper mesh to kill signals. Break someone's arm if they break in to my house. -_-

Remember powerline adapters? Think of similar technology heavily integrated into the powerbox.....

What's with technology discussions going into irrelevant discussions on the nsa. The nsa probably doesn't give a jot about uninteresting average joes

no but they love data, literally any and all data on everybody

If they have no reason to use your data and most of it they won't. And if their is no data that's worth chasing down they further will ignore it. Nsa fear mongering should stop.

the issue is that they are still collecting the data, this argument is the same as if you have done nothing wrong you have nothing to fear. all it takes is a disgruntled nsa employee to look up information on maybe an ex girlfriend etc. also the nsa its self has shown it is untrustworthy, its lied to congress, it hasnt shown any attempt to change. its just a big black data sucking entity that has humans in charge, and humans very often are not the best thing to have in charge.

To expand on this, the issue isn't right now per se.  Since they have more data than they can really use, they would have to specifically target you if they wanted to learn anything.  The issue is that they are holding all this historical data, and once the processing power shows up, they will be able to search through all the old data with ease.  Then they will be able to find out who did things they don't like.

The other issue becomes, what happens when you want to do something "they" don't like in the future?  You want to hold some government protests?  Maybe you want to be a politician but don't want to play ball with the corrupt people on top?  Magically, anything and everything from your past will show up, because they have had it the whole time.  Remember that stupid thing you did or said 20 years ago when you were a teenager online?  Its the things you do now that are completely normal, that will become "wrong" or taboo in the future that will show why letting them collect all this data is bad.

Not that I think we can really stop it, since it is basically human nature to try and be in control, and information is the greatest control over people you can have.  Make them fear that everyone will "find out" about them.

one easy thing i like to point out to americans is how hostile they were to "communist" sympathisers  in the cold war, if that ever happens again then the thought police will just look through all those face book comments and suddenly your in jail or exiled from the country.

Yah, no kidding, the Red Scare was not a joke.  And we could easily have another mass hysteria and suddenly anyone who's thoughts about idea X differ from what is currently "correct" will be the "enemy".
