How does R9 290 compare to 970?

About 85% to 95% of the performance depending on title.

390 outperforms the 970 by about 5% - the 290 is about 5% behind the 970 cause of some refinement done to the board in the 300 series.

They are in the same league but the 970 is just about always ahead in performance by 5-15% with the 290 ahead in price to performance by a good amount.

thermals yes. Power draw difference is 43W though.

970 also doesn't support A-sync Compute - just sain' - don't kill the messenger :P

well... tdp of 145W compared to 275W

which is actually a really big decision point for some.

True - but a lot of people get confused over power draw and I figured I'd throw that in there that it's different than TDP. Question - isn't the 970 170W TDP? I thought the 960 was 120W, 970 was 170W and 980 was 180W if memory serves.
