Hello everyone, it has been quite some time since I posted in the forums, but I come to you with a problem. My friend finally wants to buy a ssd to speed things up but he already has the OS on a hard drive. How would you move the OS from a 1tb hdd to a 500 gb ssd? Id clone it except for the lack of space on the ssd.

I'd suggest Clean Installation.

You can clone a single volume, like C drive.

Why would you lone it?  You're just asking for troubles.  Do a clean install and do it right!  :D

is he using the full 1 tb? as long as hes using less than the available space on the ssd (probably about 480gb) then cloning wont be a problem

if he is then tell him to take some of the stuff off the hard drive and put it on an external source to lower the amount of data on the hdd then clone it

the 1tb is almost full, hence the need for a new drive, hed also like faster boot times and loading times etc, basically wants an ssd.

would a clean install:

1)remove the old os from the old drive?

2)set the new drive as the boot drive?

3) keep all the files and programs on the old drive untouched?(im assuming he doesnt want anything deleted hence the need for new drives)

doesnt work that way, if he installs the os on the new drive he wont have the registry for the programs on the old drive so he would need to reinstall them

looks like his best bet would be a clean install and reinstall all the other stuff on the hard drive

I don't know if you're serious or what... But I guess I can answer the questions even though they have nothing to do with the situation.

1) no

2) no

3) depends on what you do.
