hey guys,

so this is one of those threads again...

so im usually prettty confident in my hardware choosing but when it come to workstations i  got no idea.

i was hoping you guys could give me some good suggestion.

what im lookin for is the best price / performance workstation.

this is not gonna be used for gaming at all. mainly heavy virtual machine usage and running automated tests so no graphics power required. just cpu and ram.

budget is that important since if i get it approofed my boss will be paying fo it but im trying to make it really attractive so not more than 2000 €. ideally between 1000 and 1500 bucks but ultimatly price / performance ratio is more important than total budget.

so if someone got an idea id appreciate it thanks

those "i7" Xeons make a good deal. For a lower budget, best workstation CPU is prolly (don't hate me) FX 8300 OCed to 8350. Anything pricier than that i7 xeon has to be a 2011 i7/Xeon.

Something like this:

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor  ($299.99 @ Micro Center)
Motherboard: MSI X99S SLI Plus ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard  ($195.99 @ SuperBiiz)

yes well i also thought about xeons but i dont quite know how they stack up against each other and wich xeon is best for buck. thanks though

thanks but i got a few questions if allowed:

would it be possible to get more cores than that?

why the huge storage? maybe i forgot to mention that its not a server of any kind its gonna be crunching numbers. i was thinking some sshd would do fine.

what is the 960 doing there?

For more cores u will need to check out socket 2011-3 xeons.

The xeon series come without an iGPU(no intel hd) so u need a gpu, tho he could have gone cheaper, if it is not for gaming/editing.

Workstations usually tend to have quite big storage, so thats why he added a 4tb hdd. Also the red series are server/workstation grade.

The site has changed....

xeons and i5/i7s are the same, mostly. Xeons don't have iGPU. 2011-3 Xeons have up to 18 cores but are usually clocked lower. 1150 Xeons are equivalent to i5/i7s, but without the iGPU. Their performance is same, as a i7 with same amount of cores at the same speed.

Xeon E3 V3 have Haswell cores and are roughly equivalent to i5/i7. They do have slightly better memory performance and lack a couple minor features of the i5/i7 cpu. The model in this build has 4 hyperthreaded cores and an igpu (HD P4600).

What do you think about this?

Yes basicly what i was thinking but maybe going for a sshd instead and an even more basic gpu? Also sadly those prices dont really translate

Ok this seems like a really good deal but still a bit more cores for virtualization would be nice

An i7-5820K would be the next step. An alternative might be two of the Xeon E3 builds if work can be split across boxes.
