Hi Linus Tech Tips community. I'm hoping you guys can help me out as ##windows IRC on Freenode isn't being too much help.

I've got my custom built PC that was working fine, but I had restarted it to install Windows updates, like anyone, and then came to realise my WiFi didn't work anymore. Windows 10 was working fine before this, with WiFi, but that's beside the point.

I have an Intel 330 series SSD. It's 180GB if it makes a difference. Now, whenever I try to install Windows on it (2nd disk I've tried, burnt on 2 separate machines), it says "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one". It works fine to boot it in to Ubuntu and I have no external hard drives or anything plugged in. If anyone could help, I would be forever grateful.

You have to perform complete partition delete.

If you have more than 1 partition that has data on it, Plugin that SSD as secondary drive on some other PC and backitup.

Then try to boot up the Windows installation dvd or USB, then on installation menu, click that drive and click option, then delete, then create new.

Then proceed with the installation.

Post back with results.

I've got everything I need off it, and I kinda formatted it like 10 times. So I plug it in to another PC and then format it?

Don't format it, Instead delete all the partition in that drive. It will help.

I deleted all the partitions on it in the Windows install disk. Did you mean that?

Yep.

Did it work?

Sorry for potato quality.

I just tried that, and it didn't work. I'd like to also mention I've tried formatting the disk with (and without) the SSD align from diskpart. To no avail.

UEFI or Legacy install?

If your installing in Legacy mode on a UEFI system please disconnect all other hard drives from the system (internal and external)then try installing again.

As a rule of thumb, you should disconnect all other drives attached to the system when installing Windows. So only have the SSD you wish to install on plugged in.

It's not a UEFI system, but I'll still try.

I'll try that, thanks!

This video could be of help. The process for installing Windows hasn't changed since Vista so should be still relevant.
