My download speed on the PC is a lot slower than on my laptop (and another laptop someone used for testing). I have a 1Gbps connection and my PC reaches something near 500-600 Mbps and my laptop(a 2014 MacBook Pro) get upwards of 850 Mbps. I know that 500-600 is still a lot compared to what most people get, but since I can do better I'm wondering what could possibly slow the connection down. Something interesting is that 3-4 months ago I would get speeds of 900-950 Mbps on my computer so it's definitely something on my part not the ISP (they also tested with another laptop and got almost 800 Mbps). I tested both the PC and the laptop with the same Ethernet cable connected to the same router (a TP-Link) so they were tested the same way.

I'm using Windows 10 64-bit Home edition and use the Ethernet port from the mobo (a Maximus V Formula w/ latest BIOS). I don't see any network drivers on the asus page so I just use the ones from Windows update (might be the issue?). I also have Kaspersky Internet Security which might slow the PC down, BUT I tried running some tests with it disabled and saw no changes :(

Any suggestions would be appreciated, I'm not sure what other information I should give you guys so please help :D

edit: wired connection on both laptop and pc (same cat6 cable)

edit2: the setup is as follows fibre -> some Huawei modem thingy from the ISP -> Ethernet cable to TP-Link router -> Ethernet cable to PC

edit3: I WAS able to get 1Gbps a few months back on my PC, I just don't know what might cause the slowdown now, seeing as I haven't changed anything lately.

Is this a wireless connection or a wired connection? try a different cable. going from Cat5 to Cat5e made all the difference.

You lucky sod :D

Wired for both laptop and pc, used the same cable as well. I disconnected the PC and tried the laptop to run the speed tests. I'm not sure there's anything wrong with the cable since I used it back when the speed almost reached the Gigabit per second :D

edit: just checked and it's actually a Cat6 cable

But I did reach speeds close to 1Gbps fairly often a few months ago. I think it might be something related to some piece of software. Or maybe the adapter is slightly malfunctioned? Can this even happen?

if you are using speedtest.net, that runs primarily in Flash, which is is single threaded and dependent on your browser. Try using different browers, as Chrome has their own builtin version, but Firefox will use whatever you have from Adobe. Other sites are different, I think speakeasy.net uses Java but I could be wrong. There was a new fancy site I found once that used HTML5, and would also do a bunch more network measurements as well, but I haven't been able to find it since.

Looking to buy GTX690, other multi-GPU cards, or single-slot graphics cards:

There are many different factors that could be causing the problem. I'll talk about some basic info, hopefully it will be useful in helping you pin-point the bottle neck of the root cause. Keep in mind I'm not going to go into detailed info - just basic non-tech wording.

1) Mac's are based loosely on unix, and have some amazing network configs or 'drivers' (if you will).

2) Windows may be bloated causing slow speeds or some other software issue within Windows indirectly causing slow speeds like others have stated.

3) Could be the NIC on the computer.

First, I'd want to rule our Windows causing the problem. Run a live linux USB (such as Ubuntu) and complete a speed test. This will narrow it down between a software/driver limitation/issue or a hardware limitation. Please post back with the results so we may further troubleshoot the issue at hand.

I would say that when you tested previously, it was not with Windows 10 and the drivers were more mature for your NIC with Windows 7 or 8, that you were probably using.

Have you tried downloading the latest driver from the NICs website? (almost all motherboard manufactures does not keep drivers up to date when the product has been released for 6+ months).

Try updating the driver :)
