Hey guys, was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for cheap laptops (~$500 AUD) for school. My current one is dying and has a horrible keyboard and touchpad.

Looking for something with:

  • 13.6 - 15.6" display (idgaf about resolution or quality here, as I realize it will almost be shitty no matter what)
  • Keyboard that is nice to type on
  • i3 CPU performance level minimum (I like to hoarde browser tabs)
  • Graphics performance good enough to comfortably play League of Legends at 1280x720 lowest settings at 70FPS minimum (not a big deal though)
  • Decent build quality

I couldn't care less about storage as I'll get an 128GB SSD for it. Thanks for any suggestions you guys have, hope this thread doesn't seem stupid and annoying like those cringeworthy youtube comments about whether people's builds are good enough for minecraft. I only ask this because the state of shopping for laptops in Australia is horrendous and incredibly time consuming at best.

Well if you want to recommend crazy over budget laptop, not to mention the need to purchase Windows, get Surface Pro 3 (Pro 4 coming possible in Oct.). At least it has features interesting for student beside the Apple logo. It is a laptop with a decent keyboard which you code with it, that hasn't been re-invented, and near same size keys as a desktop keyboard, so easy to get used to it. It can be a powerful tablet with an excellent touch screen, and has the real deal pen technology, for writing note like pen and paper, complete with palm rejection, hovering detection and pressure detection, and pretty accurate. With OneNote he can get get super organized notes, import pdf and write notes into it, search, sky all his note on the cloud, print them if he wants to, add even ads recordings. The pen allows don't thing you can't with keyword only system, or very hard and time consuming: sketch, graph, and do math.

They aren't amazing ultrabooks because they're shit.

Ok, you're saying they are not good because they are bad. Why are they "shit"?

They have amazing build quality, excellent screen, exeptional battery life and a great OS. Also they have great track pad and keyboard, their speakers are decent and they have incredible soundcard for an ultrabook.

Now explain why this is "shit",  unless you are a hater (which you probably are and i already wasted my time.)

They have amazing build quality,

Alright build quality for similar priced/type systems.

excellent screen

TN panel and super low resolution is not excellent. Maybe on a 300$ laptop, maybe.. but not at this price range.

exeptional battery life

Same for all similarly priced/specs systems

and a great OS.

Subjective.

Also they have great track pad and keyboard

True. Although the keyboard depends if you like island keys or not. Also it is missing keys for using it with Windows.

their speakers are decent and they have incredible soundcard for an ultrabook.

I don't think you ever touched a sound card. It is your average 5$ sound chip. Same grade as you have on your good motherboards. Granted it is not the 1$ or 0.50$ chips, but it is not anywhere near a 'good' sound chip.

Now explain why this is "shit",  unless you are a hater (which you probably are and i already wasted my time.)

This is already off topic, and it will end now.

How talking about a laptop/ultrabook is off topic on a thread that someone needs a laptop? O.o

I didn't suggest a macbook at the first place. I just liked the AdamMLGTips's idea in general and i don't believe they're "shit"

You could get all of that on a Windows device for half the price.

I personally can't find a nice ultrabook at the half price of a macbook (pro) except the XPS 13 (which actually costs 200E more than the macbook pro 13 retina)

Off topic talking about Mac vs PC type conversation, when the OP is waiting for new suggestions.

Macbook's are not ultrabook. The only ultrabooks from Apple is the new MacBook, and the MacBook Air.

Yes, i know that not all macbooks aren't ultrabooks and that's why i wrote "ultrabooks/laptops". I didn't know that talking about macbooks on a laptop topic, is off-topic.

The OP didn't mention the OS or any brand and i believe a macbook could work nicely. The only problem is that it probably cost way more the ~500$, but so does the Surface Pro 3 you suggested.

Pricing at Australia can be weird, but i thought they could get Apple products at reasonable prices compared to others and that's why i liked the macbook idea. Maybe i'm wrong, but the last time i asked someone from AU, the Surface Pro 3 was more expensive that a macbook air.

(by the way, Bim Job is just saying that Apple sucks, while i actually liked the suggestion of AdamMLGTips and i explained why macbooks are great (IMO of course)... It's an actual suggestion if the budget is flexible but yet I am the one who's off topic.) *mindblown*

Well then you're looking at the wrong products.

Why don't you suggest some laptops then? It would help me AND the OP too!
